Our clients, a young family, wanted us to create the perfect home while staying true to the natural wooded surroundings of this 3,200-square-foot Bauhaus-style house in Weston, Massachusetts, built in 1938. We incorporated lots of earthy materials like subtle woven touches and timber and metallic finishes to give the interior natural textures and form. The redesign also preserves the beautiful Bauhaus architecture of the house while updating it for modern living.

During the year-and-a-half-long makeover, the layout of this five-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house was reconfigured to add space by removing walls, old beams, and an extra staircase. The new look combines the client’s low-key style and Asian heritage with Dane Austin’s signature art deco sensibilities. The resulting cozy, minimalist environment is light and airy and marked with playful elements including a zig-zag pattern throughout the house, from table legs to the placement of abstract light fixtures over the dining table. The primary bedroom provides a peaceful retreat that includes a fireplace and a dreamy watercolor wash on the walls. And the sun porch was turned into a relaxing screen-free space with a bespoke ceiling patina reminiscent of fall leaves.
