Victorian Painted Lady with a Twist, Craftsman

A Victorian painted lady and 21st century kitchen might seem like an odd couple but with homeowners that pay homage to the architecture and their love of color, anything is possible. A former addition meant a spacious dining space but also a kitchen that is a major thoroughfare thru the house. By closing an opening, we were able to move the cook’s activities to one side of the kitchen and create a traffic-free aisle. The refrigerator, range and sink make a super functional work triangle along the exterior wall and decorative cabinetry to house pantry items, small appliances, and television flank the interior wall.

True to the time period, inset cabinets, glass fronts, period style hardware and soapstone countertops pay honor to early twentieth century materials. The color scheme of blue and orange is a modern take on an arts & crafts motif and punctuate an otherwise neutral room. By opting for a banquette, an additional 12-18” was freed up to allow for seating at the peninsula. Easy care vinyl cushion seats, reproduction lighting, and layered window treatments enhance the space for yet another generation.
