Not Your Everyday Blues-U shaped Kitchen, Serving Hutch

This couple and their two teenage daughters were overpowered in their dark, cramped kitchen typical of a 1980’s builder tract home with dark cabinets, formica countertop and one, large overhead fluorescent light fixture. A major update and lighter feel was essential, even more so when the East-facing kitchen is cast in shade later in the day.

With the family’s love of travel and long history of living in Hawaii, an element of the tropics would be needed to make this a cozy, fun kitchen in which to live and play. Mom’s favorite color became our accent. Blue touches are seen in glass tile at the entertainment hutch, blown glass pendant globes, and accessories. The travertine backsplash tile along the perimeter reminds the owner of Pacific waves.

While the existing floor plan allowed for a tight work triangle, it did not allow for more than one cook. We moved the range to the West wall to create its own work area. Two long runs are now available for prep and serving of food. No longer will Dad have to ask, “What can I do to help?” from outside the work area. The refrigerator is accessible to cooks and guests alike and the opening sized to accommodate a new model when the budget allows.

A hutch with stone countertop was added for a heat-resistant serving area when barbecuing and serving up hot, Hawaiian pu-pu platters. When not entertaining, this area becomes telecommunications central with cell phone chargers and a wireless modem as well file storage for Mom as she tends to her volunteer commitments. An adaptable space that is definitely not reflective of your “everyday blues”.
