Making the Most of What You Have-Eclectic Family Kitchen

The first thing I learned when meeting this newly married couple was that serious cooking happened in this 1950’s ranch. Set on a pretty, suburban lot the homeowners' wish for this kitchen was that it be an extension of the rest of their home; that the kitchen open up to the dining room and allow guests and family to enjoy the light-filled backyard no matter where they are seated for dinner. A short supply of counter space, unimaginative lighting, and cramped eating area are remedied in this design that takes into account a family with a growing boy, two dogs, and frequent business travel by both adults. A bulletin and chalk board tucked out of site keeps everyone on track; expanded prep areas, coffee station, and cookbook display keep the cook content; and cell phone and laptops are charged atop a storage area for dog kibble and pencils/paper for 5th grade homework lessons at the banquette. Inspiration for this earthly color palette came from a box of seashells the homeowners collected on vacation. Beige, brown, orange, yellow, green and blue are echoed in the cream and mink cabinets, carrera tile backsplash, satin nickel hardware, repurposed industrial base table, and - the real scene stealer – Yellow Moon granite countertops.
