i need some help with funeral etiquette

i know this will sound convoluted but it's kind of a longish story...

my first husband and i were married 25 years, it was an amicable divorce back in 1998 and we remained friends. we both eventually remarried and the 4 of us often went out for supper together and celebrated major holidays with our son (only child)...

when i lost my second husband to cancer 20 years ago, they were a great support to me, always included me in every holiday celebration and the 3 of us went out for dinner quite often (still do).

she and i call each other "sis", she is easily my best friend.

her mother died 3 days ago (cancer) after being home on hospice for a short time. she had prearranged her funeral and insisted she did not want a big blowout. she had many, many friends but she wanted a private service/burial which is what her children have planned. there will be a (probably very well-attended) celebration of life immediately after the private service/burial where many many friends will gather.

i am torn about going to the "private" service. a couple of sherry's sisters are acquaintances of mine but not what i would consider "good friends". the rest of her family members all live quite a distance away and i have never met any of them.

i feel a bit like i would be intruding if i go to the private service/burial. on the other hand, i don't want to NOT go and hurt sherry's feelings because we do think of each other as family. i would be mortified if she expects me to be there and i don't go.

what would you do??
