The Pinks! To view, to drink, to smell, …
Did anyone catch the PINK (pink-red) sun early evening yesterday? Eastern or northeast US at least.
The haze from the Ontario fires have given broad swathes of haze over parts of the US. It’s a bit eery, but interesting. It has allowed for cooler temperatures — low to mid 80s versus 90s, and with variable winds.
Refreshing Pink Drink: Cran-Cherry poured over a glassful of icecubes. It is very refreshing. Perhaps a bit sweet. I may cut the next glass with sparkling water.
Pink dianthus is still in bloom. I love these fragrant small flowers with their glaucous foliage.
The virginia rose and rosa rugosa are stll in bloom, but finishing up. They don’t like the heat (nor do I but it’s easier to take with the breeze and haze attenuating the otherwise harsh sun).
Pink and white tall garden phlox is starting as is pale pink ”Bouncing Bette” (Saponaria).

Comments (9)Last year was the first year that my PUDC had a few tips that dried up. It was very hot, with pitiful rainfall. We are on white sand, so watering doesn't hold very long. I water a LOT, but both of my PUDC get a decent amount of sun. I had one Gold Standard out in almost full sun. It had burned tips too. The other 5 GS don't get as much sun, so no burning. I'd guess that if you don't have PUDC in lots of sun then it would look great all year. Mine usually do. But the few crispy tips were only apparent up close. Mine got almost white by August. I like it better when it is yellow. Love the crazy frizzy appearance. I know that lots of people hate Medusa, find it difficult to grow. Mine was a decent sized potful when I bought it at a local nursery, not a TC plug. That may be the trick to growing troublesome hostas. Let someone else grow them the first few years. I have 3 nice little clumps of Lemon Lime and 3 of Feather Boa. I think LL multiples a bit more quickly. I want to divide them so I can have more for "free", but also like the way they look now. I divided my Chartreuse Wiggles last fall, and am sorry it is only half the size it was last year. Comments (77)It was fun reading all of this, especially since it goes back to '06. That first post of Lars with the cherry cream soda...yummmy. I only consume coffee if it's ice cream, Kahlua or some other dessert. I like tea, black, green, but not any spiced teas. Really dislike mint too. Mostly I drink flavored unsweetened seltzer, iced tea or lemonade. Occasionally I'll have a fruit soda, but I find them too sweet these days so I mix them with my seltzer. Alcohol? Not really. Don't like wine as a rule. I can deal with a little champagne or Asti. Will drink vodka, that Kahlua making it a Black Russian. Smiles. I can go several years or more without having any alcohol. Last year I turned my current [at the time] vodka into vanilla. This fall an old friend from high school came to visit and brought a bottle of vodka. I had 2 light Cape Cods and when he left I turned the Svedka into vanilla. LOL. In winter in the evening we either have hot tea or hot cocoa often. Comments (68)parma, you would love Laura Mercier's almond and coconut product line, I have the hand creme ; I also love Partylite's coconut cove tealights and votives. I too adore a coconut scent although I don't eat it. A young child coming in from playing outside in the summer, their hair smells of fresh dirt and sun , a "good" stink, like someone said about sniffing dog paws. I always have to smell products before I decide if I want to use them, even the most miraculous face cream has to have a smell appealing to me. I love spa smells, eucalyptus always seems to be in the background; Aveda has a candle called Pure and it captures the spa smell....See More18 yr old drinking
Comments (18)Oh yuck!... I think you're very wise to be so concerned and I'll keep my fingers crossed for a mild ride... In my book, social drinking with friends at parties at age 18 is within the "normal" range of teenage activities, but having empty bottles rolling around inside drawers and rum-filled soda cans is "problem" behavior. Not to mention the knife! Drinking alone in her room and having empty bottles hidden are both signs of a possibly serious problem. I imagine you're aware that a vulnerability to substance addiction is an inherited trait? And that with alcoholism on both sides of her biological family tree, your SD is very vulnerable to alcoholism? Is this a point that was brought home to her in the strongest possible terms? Seems every 18 year old knows that they personally are invincible -- but the stats show otherwise... Al-Anon is a great place to get more information. I can't imagine a better group of people to help you and your DH sort out just how big of a problem this is likely to be at this stage -- Is it something you will be likely able to handle on your own with guidance and discipline? Or is rehab called for? (I can't see rehab actually working until your SD believes she has a problem that is beyond her own ability to control.) And what type of interventions and control strategies to they advocate? It's good your DH took the car plates away, but at some point, she'll probably get to drive again. When I was a teenager, my parents had a policy that turned out to be very effective at helping me learn to set my own limits. I had a curfew, and the house rule was that when I came in, I had to wake up Mom and spend a few minutes talking with her about where I had gone and what I had done (though they always knew where I was going in advance also.) That simple late-night conversation was enough to assure my mom that when I came in, it would be on time, and that I wouldn't be so drunk that I couldn't pass the 'coherent conversation' test. That didn't stop me entirely from underage drinking, but it did prevent me from underage OVER-drinking. It might be something to consider if you conclude your SD's drinking may be controllable....See More
3 months agoLove these pictures!! I saw some gorgeous pink gladiolas last week but wasn't in a position to take a picture.
I do have this picture of a sunset from 11 years ago. I think the fires were in Canada at the time. It was pretty eerie.

3 months agolast modified: 3 months agoBeautiful photos - but those hollyhocks are really special. I haven't tried planting them for a number of years - but floral's photos remind me that I need to include them in my garden.
These are my lilies - their stems were 6 to 7 feet tall and I had to cut most of them because the heavy thunderstorms were knocking them to the ground. The aroma is just heavenly.
This one stalk has 18 flowers and buds on it. - Another reason they fall - top heavy.

Love seeing the Royal Hawaiian, theresafic - I was in Waikiki on my way to and from New Zealand in April, such a gateway hotel to the beach, I enjoyed my Mai Tai beach experience, although stayed at a less posh place !
