Tomatoes: Your Favorites, Your Star Performers
Comments (9)I grew Cosmonaut Volkov, and they did not split or have bad skin for the most part. I got a decent harvest from them, even though the vines have had some kind of fungus or bacterial spot on the leaves starting in early September. If I had done a better job of spacing my garden and supporting the tomatoes (they sort of grew all together like a thicket), or perhaps had sprayed some fungus preventative on them, they would have done even better I'm sure. They also taste very good in our opinion, but we have not eaten a lot of heirlooms, so the connoisseurs might disagree. Siletz came up early, the fruit were big, and the plants rather hardy. They are determinate, and are one of the parthenogenic varieties (blossoms need not pollinate to set fruit) developed at Oregon State decades ago. I would say that their taste does not compare with the more well-known heirloom types (or Volkov), but they are still better than Safeway tomatoes ;), and very easy to grow for such a big fruited tomato. Next year I am think about trying Thessaloniki, Anna Russian, Fireball or New Yorker, maybe Eva's Purple Ball or Persimmon (which may be too late-season for around here) and some others already mentioned. Has anyone grown these in the Seattle area?...See MoreSpeaking of Favorites.... (with apologies to the Bard)
Comments (18)I like Cosmonaut Volkov too. Once made a post that I clearly remember the title--"Cosmonaut Volkov Blasting Off"--really great tomato, btw. I like two-word names, like Bear Claw, Burgess Lemon, Chocolate Cherry, Green Grape, Giant Belgium, June Pink, etc. My fave is Mister Stripey--the graphic I use on the packet is my FB avatar. You can have a lot of fun making up tomato names, select any amount or combo of the below listed. You need a relative or person or critter: Aunt, Uncle, Mom, Dad, Dr. Mister, Earl, Butcher, Porter, John, Liz, Prince, Queen, Bear, Monkey, Shark, Cow, Zebra, etc. You need a color: Pink, Red, Yellow, Rainbow, Brown, Black, Orange, or Purple, Green, and nowadays there's Blue too. You need a shape of a fruit--Plum, Pear, Grape, Strawberry, Banana, Cherry, Apple, Orange, Tangerine, Lemon A location would do too--a state, a country, a continent, valley, lake, river, poderosa or where else you choose. All good fun....See MoreWhat is your favorite carol?
Comments (35)One of our local radio stations used to put together a prerecorded program of Christmas songs that ran from Christmas eve through Christmas day (so the deejays could have the time off). They had many alternative classics, like Long-Haired Radical Socialist Jew (Hugh Blumenfeld), Toy Sack (Bob Rivers), Father Christmas (the Kinks), and The Christians and the Pagans (Dar Williams). I always enjoyed listening to it on the way back from Midnight Mass. They didn't do it this year, and I was sad....See MoreWhat is your favorite “easy” foundational tree?
Comments (10)Strawberry trees are a bit messy when the fruit drops but nothing is really clean. I've noticed them being planted in parking lots lately. My favorite specimens, though, are at Holy Spirit church in Fremont and they have been there a good long time. (If you google the church and click on "see outside", you can rotate the view to see the row of strawberry trees along the fence.) If you are in that area and like trees, don't miss the super fun pepper tree less than a block away...http://ca-fremont2.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/6725/CEN_7_CAPepperTree?bidId= Have you looked at some of the ficuses? There are some in my neighborhood that are so perfectly treelike they look like they stepped out of a cartoon...definitely broccoli trees!...See More- 13 days ago
