What is your comfort food?
Comments (19)Hi Patty! I don't think that I have complete Celiac. Or, at least not a worst case situation. My dad does and I know that it's much worse than my issues. So far, my gluten intolerance doesn't seem to cause permanent damage to my intestines. It just makes me very sick, shaky... The last time I had fast food, it took over a week to get over it. I can't quite throw off the side effects. It never used to hit me so hard, although I did buy a lot of Pepto! ;~) I could be under estimating it, but I'm not sure. It just seems that everything that we eat, and I love, has something in it that I react very badly to. Any type of wheat, oat or spelt hits me pretty hard. Always has, I guess, and I've blamed it on other things. I'm not a professional chef, but I did spend a lot of years learning how to cook like one. Now, most of what I know, is useless. Other than the gluten issue, virtually everything that is used in modern cooking makes me pretty sick. Virtually all yeasts, both Baker's and Brewer's. (I always wondered why beer made me so sick!) Egg yolks of any kind. I asked about even unusual eggs! Sugar cane Red grapes, which means red wine and rasins are out. Virtually all cow milk and by-products. I used to live on yogurt and my whey reactions are very high. I hate purchased goat milk and cheese. I actually grew up with goats and I can tell that they're milking the wrong ones. It's not supposed to taste like they're milking the boys! ;~) Family life has virtually always revolved around food. I grew up with many foreign friends and spent time in many of those countries. We ate everything and learned how to cook most of it. I can still eat quite a bit of Asian food. I just have to be careful. I used to make many of my own curry mixtures, homemade pizza, pastas and breads. etc. I made the most incredible lemon curd. It's all egg yolks and sugar! :~( I'm not sure that I'm even going to pick berries this year. I always pick the rose hips, for preserves, after the first frost, too. Unless I learn how to make things w/o cane sugar or gluten, pies, preserves, cobblers... are out of the question! I'm pretty much eating, now, just to get by. I never understood that attitude before. How could you not just love all of the different tastes, spices and combinations. I've just become too spooky about it now. I've only been aware of it for three or four months and the change is really almost worth it. My lifelong migraines are completely gone. I can't remember a time since i was in gradeschool that I didn't have a headache of some kind simmering continually(24/7 for at least the last 30 years). The migraines started later and eventually even Imitrex could only tone it down to a tolerable level without it going away. I haven't had one in several months and they were becoming almost a weekly ordeal. I've lost close to 40lbs and still dropping. :~) Apparently, sugar, fat and starches have something to do with weight gain!;~) (And the taste of food!) I did go clothes shopping the otherday... I actually enjoyed it. ;~) Scott...See MoreWhat Is Your ''Comfort Food''?
Comments (39)Mostly simple food from one's childhood, then. Makes sense. When I'm down, I eat nothing. I wonder what that says about my childhood. Who knows what I'd eat if there were a death in my family. So far, there's been none, except my grandfather who passed away at 100. I can't recall eating after that. SWMBO has had a lot more death in her family. She has many times more family than I do, a profusion of siblings and cousins and nieces and aunts. Gotta love those Catholics. They don't have the superior Chinese genetics (wink, tease). And, I tell you, the health care in their little corner of western Washington is abysmal (okay, maybe I'm being unfair, but it sure isn't impressive). Everyone who can afford it goes to Seattle for serious treatment, SWMBO's sister goes all the way to UCLA, but for most folks, that's not an option. Finally, since I am feeling ornery (try getting on a plane in Portland at 7:30 am, sleeping five hours inflight, forcing yourself to go to sleep at a normal hour in NYC, and now wide awake at midnight - I'm about ready to get dressed and go out for a walk) I don't get the bathtub thing. SWMBO loves her bubble baths, I won't get in a bathtub unless I'm sick or injured. P.S.: For those of you with trainable husbands, I recommend starting with a latte in the bathtub. Then you can work him up to full meals. Worked in my house :-(...See MoreWhat does "cooking" mean to you?
Comments (44)So much fun to read everyone's responses! I never really thought about what "cooking" is, and I don't know that it's important to me to have a definition, per se. I prepare a lot of meals without actually heating anything...e.g. yogurt and fresh fruit, salads, sandwiches, plus the preparation of meat and veggies for my husband to grill -- he cooks, but without my prep, that couldn't happen. I like to cook a lot of things from scratch, but I do use supermarket ingredients such as dried pasta, butter, cheese, peanut butter, canned tomatoes, some canned beans, etc. I do buy supermarket bread, rolls and tortillas, but occasionally make homemade bread or focaccia or tortillas. I prefer fresh veggies, but do use some frozen; I cook beans myself and freeze them, but also use the occasional can of black beans. I like to bake - cookies, brownies, bars, muffins, scones, quick breads, the occasional pie or cake. I do make homemade pie crust. We occasionally order pizza, but usually just make it at home. My stand-alone freezer is full to bursting now -- besides a lot of beef, chicken, shrimp, spices, and butter, I've got black beans and garbanzos that I cooked, homemade Cornish pasties, homemade applesauce, and some cheeses. Tonight for the family's dinner, I heated up some of the pasties and applesauce (I'm going out with my book club...yay!). We do use some convenience foods...cereal, bread, Greek yogurt, the occasional frozen dinner, and some Purdue chicken fingers (hey, nobody's perfect!). Some canned soup. Granola bars and fruit cups for the kids' quick lunch box grabs. I didn't always cook this much from scratch -- it's evolved over they years. I used to use more convenience products, but have sort of gotten away from it over time. My mom cooked from scratch a lot, but used convenience products, too. Interesting that someone mentioned just-add-water pancake mix. I don't use that often -- sometimes I mix up the dry part of the pancake recipe, divide in in half, and portion the halves into airtight containers so I can quickly add milk, eggs, and melted butter to make from-scratch whole grain pancakes on a weekday morning. However, I usually keep a box of just-add-water mix in the pantry for those days when we are simply out of eggs or milk. Bon appetit, everyone!...See MoreWeek: 31 Comfort foods or comfort memories?
Comments (33)And Happy New Year back at'cha! Wish you all the best in these next months. :) Pit Update: Saturday a friend of a friend came and took both of them. She's mature, got a good job, owns her home with a big yard. She's keeping Bobby (aka puppy-boy) and her neighbor is taking sweet Maggie (aka puppy girl). These were the happiest, sweet dogs. Turned out to be clean, trained, house broken, curious, and just joyful. Someone dumped them, I'm sure, but they were house dogs. Perhaps breeders, but definitely house dogs. It was interesting. All the time they were here, they never left the yard. When I went out, they were right beside me. Bobby, would play catch with a 6' 4x4. Throwing it in the air, standing on it and trying to pick it up. Made it difficult for me to sort out a load of reused lumber, which had nails in it. It had to wait. He was a JOY. What a energetic puppy he was. He'd sit and kinda roll backwards with his feet stuck out in front of him, like puppies do. Didn't quite lift his leg. Hasn't earned his man card yet. Although they always wanted to ride in my car, they didn't want to go with her. (Leaving me? Awwww) But once in the car, they settled in, with their heads poking out between the seats to look out the window. The only time I'd see Maggie get excited was when wheels turned. Cars, trucks, bikes. She'd bite at them from underneath the door, vs. from the front. Scared me she'd get a tooth stuck and be crushed. I mention this, because the week before I had to get 2 new tires. Saturday night when I came out of work, I had a flat. Grrrrr. Had myself towed to my car place. He called me the next morning and asked if I'd hit anything, or was out in the field, etc. [wait for it] There were 2 puncture marks, one torn, in the sidewall of my new tire. So.... I guess Maggie is successful in her mission of killing All Things Tire. Got my living room painted. It is Beeeuuuuttiful. Even moreso without the crap stacked to the ceiling. Ceiling is Glidden 'Natural Wicker' and the walls are Duron/SW 'Tinderbox.' I just picked up the paint for the bookshelves. All this room needs is trim. and maybe some curtains. Well, maybe not. So I have 2 rooms done, -trim. This is very, very exciting! Leaves 7 rooms to go. Drywall, finishing, paint, trim. As a dear friend once said, "Baby Steps." Well, it's only 10 years this year from that stupid fire! Baby enough? Have a great, warm day. Eat those beans and rice if that's your thing, or just watch football. (Got my MI State U sweat shirt on, just for my sisters.) Take care!...See More- 27 days agolast modified: 27 days ago
