What Is Your ''Comfort Food''?

John Liu

If you were sad, or very tired, or just needed some comfort, what would you eat?

(Recognizing that ''nothing'' might be the choice for many, e.g. me.)

SWMBO has been away all week. She's been taking care of her niece, who was dying at a terribly young age, and her niece's three daughters. Vicki died yesterday evening, holding her husband's hand. SWMBO came home tonight. Sad, tired, and in need of comfort - but also of food.

So we needed a ''comfort meal''. Which, for SWMBO, is: Cream of mushroom soup, from mushroom stock, then plenty more mushrooms, pureed, with cream. Chicken breast, pan-cooked in white white, butter, minced onions, and cream, then thickened to a sauce with some capers. Green beans, par-boiled then dry-sauteed to brown. Mashed potatoes, simple and creamy.

Dinner was served in her bubble bath. Ridiculous, but something we do occasionally. She'd do it for me, if we could find a meal that can be served in the shower.

What is your comfort meal? Either little comforts, or big comforts?

And, I wonder, what do they eat in heaven?
