I would take it as a compliment....

I've always thought they were saying "your a bit overweight"

What sort of person is he? There are some people..if they said that to me, they would "mean" it as a compliment. There are others who would mean it as a subtle slam...you have to know the person to figure out what was meant. Personally, I would say it was "not" a compliment

I think it depends on the situation... if it were someone that you aren't all that friendly with, then perhaps he was not being complimentary.. but if you had been under the weather and he knew it, then maybe it is a compliment...or if you are rather fit and not overweight much and just plain look healthy.. it too might be a compliment..

I think it can be used as a complement or as overweight. I'd take it as a complement.

Depends on who says it.

Since the man who said it to you had just lost 50 pounds, he might be thinking a lot about health lately and really meant it as a compliment to you.

Or he may think you don't look like you are on "deaths door"!

He's my financial advisor of over 25 years.

We were just visiting outside the door as I was leaving, and I complimented him on his weight loss.

He just said "and you are looking healthy"

Of course, he would not mean it to say I looked overweight, which I am.

Maybe just all he could think of was that I LOOKED HEALTHY and nothing else :o)

If you are young it might mean you are a little "meaty"...lol

But if you are older..I think they mean it...

Better than looking like death.

What I hate is..."you look tired"...well maybe I am...but I don't need to be told.

I think he meant you looked your usual healthy, happy, chipper self, as opposed to wearing a frowny face, looking haggard and hobbling around or something.

I said something like that, and never again!! He took it as a insult, and after I thought about it I agree. I apoligsed, and just said he looked great and meant in a general way.

Yeah, it's kind of a strange thing to say unless coming from a doctor or physical trainer, but I'm sure he meant it as a compliment.

Glenda, I've seen pics you've posted from your various trips and I've thought to myself before that you look very healthy. And by that I mean that you have a lovely, healthy-looking complexion, bright eyes, look lively and happy, and, well, healthy! It's sort of a strange thing for him to say, but I am sure he meant it as a compliment.

I think many people just don't know how to take a compliment and maybe he thought he had to throw something back at you when you complimented him and that was what he came up with. I'm pretty sure it wasn't meant negatively.

I would take it as a compliment -- that it looks like you are taking care of yourself (as in exercising, eating right).

Since your not a youngster or middle age,, maybe knocking on the senior door, I would say that your looking healthy is a compliment. Your not limping around, looking drug down by the years. It's harder to stay healthy as we age so looking healthy is a compliment even with extra weight.

I sometimes have to think twice when I compliment someone for losing weight. Does it sound like they looked horrible before?

I think anyone can twist just about any compliment into something it wasn't meant to be.

I took him the yearly loaves of pumpkin bread, and he told me politely that he would have to wait until tomorrow to have any.

I've been making the bread for him numbers of years, and he looks forward to the treat. Except he will have to wait until Thursday to sample.

He thus told me, the reason, is his doctor put him on a special diet and he was PROUD to tell me he had lost 50 pounds.

A compliment to his weight loss was QUITE APPROPRIATE.

I lost about 50 lbs once and someone who barely knew me came up and said "Oh my gosh, you look so different... your butt used to be so much bigger..". I'm pretty sure she later wished she hadn't complimented me quite that way.

Oh, I knew his comment was meant only to be nice. I know him that well.

I was just interested on your thoughts on what Looking Healthy meant to you.

Every time someone says I look "healthy" it always happens after I have a bit of a tan or sunburn (I am VERY fair and wear high SPF). I guess my normal pale self looks unhealthy!

Come to think of it I don't think anyone has ever said tht to me!!

What does "looking healthy" mean to you?

It simply means I'm looking healthy. If it were stated to be a slur, or a dig against me.... that would slide right past me. I don't have much perception for that sort of thing & I surely don't look for it.

To me it means you look *real* -- with good color; eyes clear, alert and focused; good posture. Clean!. Not sallow or 'ciggie grey'. Not 'artificial'. Not dejected, sick or weak.

"Healthy" is what all birds and animals look for in a mate! (Including people.)

I think people say that when they don't know what else to say..
Can't say you look "good" or "nice" without it sounding
personal.

You look "well" or "healthy" is a nice middle of the road
comment, no insult.
