10 things I've learned as a first year gardener
Comments (26)camp, I didn't realize it either until researching online and on gardenweb. "What are these cabbage lopers of which you speak?" (what the heck is a loper?) ... OHHHHHH, those gross lil green caterpillars I keep seeing. Gotcha! This has been fun to read everyone's input. There are too many gems to point them out individually, but I've learned that not only are garden bloggers really nice and helpful (per thyme2garden) but they are pretty funny, too! It's too bad I try to share the humor with my non-gardening friends and family ... (um, ok, everyone not on here!) and they give me the blank "I don't get it," stare. Such is life. I highly recommend the archived "so you want to grow a gardenia" thread... I read that a few months ago and was CRYING it was so funny. (I didn't even know what a gardenia WAS until that thread.) And it has given me the courage to venture into growing flowers this coming year ... once I make the lasagna beds this fall for spring ... and build a few more trellises ... and flip my compost ... and ask the restaurant down the street for coffee grounds ... and.. and.. and.. :P Oh, btw. The tomatoes are starting (in case anyone was troubled by my plethora of non-ripening tomatoes.) ... The gardening gods like me (at the moment ;) ). Thanks again everyone for sharing - Veronica...See MoreHow do I encourage my 2 and 3 year old to appreciate gardening?
Comments (25)I have a 2 1/2 year-old son and we also struggle with working in the yard at times. IT is better this year here are some things I have done... Let them water your containers or play with water. Drexler now tells me the flowers are crying because they are thirsty. I then give him the hose and let him have at it...last night he was right. One of my pansies was thirsty! Get excited about things. Right now EVERY DAY when I get home from work my son asks to go pick the strawberries. We go out and usually a new one is ripe (can't wait a few more weeks). He is still working on not picking the green ones, but he'll learn. Teach them what is yummy. Last year we planted carrots in a container and he would go out and pick a carrot out, wipe it off and eat it. Clean soil, no chemicals and hey he was eating carrots. Teach them to love flowers. How does it smell? How does it taste. Have them help you pick out what ones to pick. Drexler and I will do this together, go into the house and put them in vases and then talk about how pretty they are. I have a small vase by my bed that he empties out every day and replaces the water in...and then the flowers. A bit of a pain, but he is learning to appreciate my yard. Don't freak when they step on a plant, but do teach them to be nice to your plants. I have a large yard and Drex has hurt some of my plants, but we talk about how to treat them. Teach them to watch for bugs and to be interested in them. Ants can keep a kid busy for at least fifteen minutes. Tell yourself you will most likely not get a lot accomplished with your helpers so when you do accomplish something it feels good. Make them an area that is all theirs....See MoreWhat my 4 yr old learned today
Comments (8)She is a doll, but you have me scared too! I already have a very active 3 yo (4 on 7/22). He asked me yetserday if he could "jump off that white thing", referring to the diving board when the pool is done. As long as he waits a few years to jump off the roof into the pool, I think I might be safe. :0...See More10,000 Steps A Day?
Comments (15)For the past four weeks I've been working out on the company gym's treadmill 4-5 nights a week doing 3-4 miles at a brisk walk. I also add incline to help build up my hiking endurance. During the workout my heart rate runs between 128 and 136. I'm also eating salads and WW meals, drinking water, lots of water and hike at least once a week. So far I don't feel like I'm making much progress. I had a doctor appointment yesterday and weighed in more than I did before starting my workouts. And please don't tell me muscle weighs more than fat because at this point I should have lost at least a pound regardless of how "buff" (LOL) I am. My blood pressure was a bit high too. I'm so disappointed. I'll keep it going though because I really need to work on my inclines for easier hiking but geez. Jodi-...See More- 5 months ago
