I used to be interested in the big Three American sports. Living in LA during the Showtime Lakers and Gibson Dodgers era, then in SF during the Montana 49ers. I lost interest in that stuff and got deep into auto racing (F1, WRC), motorcycle racing (MotoGP), then became a bicycle racing nut - which is hard because you have to get up at 4 am to watch the European races live using various dodgy or costly streaming routes. Currently I mostly watch bike racing and ski racing, usually via YouTube.

The American women’s ski team has such potential at the Olympics this year. Mikaela Shiffrin is the most dominant racer in history, male or female, in slalom and the winningest overall with 104 (?) World Cup wins. Lindsey Vonn is the winningest racer in history in the speed events (downhill, Super G) and trying to cap a comeback at 41 years old (and skiing with a severed ACL suffered just a week ago). The men’s team isn’t as star-studded but has some fantastic racers, River Radamus is one. The freestyle team is getting online hate after some talked about how it feels to represent their country when they disagree with so much of what it’s doing; imagine that, getting hate for speaking your mind like Americans have the right to do.

Anyway, SWMBO is going to a Superbowl party because she’s a Washington girl and the Seahawks are playing. She wants me to go but (excuse #1) I’m coming down with a cold and don’t feel good, and (excuse #2) I have to demo the second floor kitchen and bathroom at the triplex. Since there’s excuses can’t be combined, I may be coerced into going. I hope there’s good food; knowing the hostess, I’m expecting unAmerican rabbit food :-(

You sound like a bit of a fair weather fan. I think it's common for people to continue to support teams they followed when growing up, even if they later move away. Those typically being the teams local to or popular in their area.

I didn’t follow any US teams growing up. I mostly didn’t grow up in the US, and my family wasn’t the slightest bit into US sports. When I did live in the US in high school, my sport was tennis. I played and watched tennis all the time. It was the era of Rosewall, Laver, Connors, Ashe, etc.

My brief - several years - interest in US sports was definitely fair weather-ism. I happened as a young adult to live in cities when their teams were killin’ it. You could hardly live in L. A. in the ’80s and not be a Lakers fan. Although I was also a Clippers fan, so didn’t solely chase success.

However, I think I’m more into watching sports where I have some personal experience or interest in the activity. Hence the interest in autosport, bicycle racing, ski racing. You watch a racer climbing a steep grade or carving a turn, and you can relate, or you think you can. I’ve never played football etc and can’t really relate to the game, except as a vehicle for beer.

Relatedly, I used to watch the cooking competition shows like Top Chef, they were kind of like sports TV for me.

The 49ers were a miserable team during the 60s and 70s. The fan base was thin. When the team later had an uptick in results, everyone and their mother touted how they'd supported the team through the many lean years and their efforts were finally paying off.

Based on my experience, if you took everyone who said they'd continued to be a 49er season ticket holder during the down years, you probably would have been able to fill Candlestick Park 5 times over.

Murraysmom, at my school it meant a certain number of language hours, more or less depending on how many languages you took. You generally had a primary, secondary, and tertiary language. Naturally, there were all the other requirements for the liberal arts. You could make it a more in-depth concentration depending on the other courses you chose in the arts, history, and philosohy, as well as in the English department, but that would be one’s own choice. I did not go that route, I was multi-interested.

Like you, I have had to curb the impulse to make corrections everywhere I go. I limit myself to when it matters!

We play cards and dice while the Superbowl is on, because for some it's boring so most of us prefer to do something interesting while it's on.
