Comments (14)I do understand what you are saying, Christopher, but I don't quite agree with you. Like Howard, I would not expect (or want) to see a huge "CAUTION: HAZARDOUS PLANT!!!" sign on the plants, I do feel it would have been wise to put a note on the plant along the lines of "Avoid sap contact with skin or eyes." Would an individual necessarily read the warning label if there was such? Perhaps not, but at least a reasonable attempt was made to make the buyer aware. And as Howard mentioned, adding one more line to the tag label provided should pose little difficulty to the grower. Again, Christopher, (because if memory serves you voiced a similar opinions on another thread) you are making a number of assumptions -- assumptions which I agree are reasonable, but they are also, IME, out of touch with reality. If you are enthusiastic enough to want to grow unusual plants, you should be enthusiastic enough to read something about them. You absolutely should! But if you honestly think that happens on a regular basis, you have an unrealistically optimistic view of your fellow man. I know from experience that this is often NOT the case. Such a lack of what you and I would consider common sense is prevalent and can easily be seen in the pet industry and elsewhere. Most of the "less educated and unknowing individuals" wouldn't be growing these plants in the first place Perhaps not "most" but still all too many do, Christopher. And again, one can also look at the pet trade which easily bears the sad truth of this out. We are all adults here ... No, Christopher, we are NOT. While most of us on this forum, I would guess, are adults we do have members who are not. There are "young'uns" out there who also have an interest in plants. And there are parents who, because it never occurs to them to check, will not go to the effort to research the plant (or animal just to re-reference the pet trade connection) their kid has or intends to get. A simple cautionary statement might alert said parent(s) or even the kid in question. Will such measures always work? Of course not, to expect such would be preposterous. To quote Douglas Adams: âÂÂA common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.â The most to be hoped for is to alert the ones that aren't complete fools....See Moremade a different kind of charitable donation
Comments (9)I go to a yarn store where they give classes. They encourage customer to knit chemo caps for charity. For every cap I donate, I get either a free knitting class or a chance to win $200 in knitting supplies. So far I've made 2. Think I'll go for one class and one chance at the free merchandise. Can't post photos, but I'll describe the caps-one is green and white stripes, the other is multi-color....See MoreMother's Day acknowledgement
Comments (71)Well, I want you to say a big thank you to all "Mothers" who have a heart and truely understand my situation. I am not making up anything I have said. My co-workers know I have SKs. I do not talk about them alot but they are aware I have SKs. Theya asked me about my Mothers Day as we were all talking about our weekend. I think it is pretty normaL to do so. Kkny do you not have any friends at work or do you not work? I do not need to justify anything to you kkny, but DH and SS do not have any insurance so I have been kind enough to put them on mine. I also had Sd on until she was to old and the insurance company would not except her any longer. No it is not part of our financial arrangement. I do make more then DH and have alot better financial status then him. As I said I have no children of my own. I have worked hard all my life, well educated and have a very respected type of employment. Thanks again for all all the comments and for those of you who are people who do not try to twist things to make others look bad. I do agree with many of you that some people are just mean, rude, inconsiderate and self centered. I plan to leave it at that and that is how I will remember my SKs. By them treating me the way they have gives me the OK to treat them the same. But, because of my nature I will not be able to do as they do to me. However, I plan to step back and not do as much....See MoreCharitable Giving
Comments (25)I give to a number of charities, many of them locally-related, but some national or international in scope, mostly related to helping people, especially those in need. One of the major international ones is the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and each dollar that I give is matched by I think it's $3.00 currently from the government's foreign aid program. A local church and farmer has a sign by the road that shows that the value of produce from some acreage there is to go to them. Most are social service, medical (e.g. hospital foundation, MSF/DWB), educational (library, univ., my seminary), multi-nation human rights (Amnesty International) etc., and some have my gift multplied by government support related to a multiplier of amounts of individual donations, e.g. CUSO (Canadian Universituy Service Overseas, that operates somewhat like the Peace Corps). In one situation a while ago I think that the ratio was $9.00 for every dollar that I gave. I've been thinking that I should do some checking as to how efficiently a number of them operate, and knew the names of some agencie to consult ... but my very active "forgetter" mechanism has been operatinal there, I fear. Do some of you Canadians know of some agencies that do that in our area? Some have told me that giving a major percentage of my income to charities seems unusual, but I say that I was giving quite a lot before, and the actual cost to me from recent percentage increase is the difference between my tax position before and what it is now. I redirected that portion of the money that formerly went to taxes to being used by those couple of dozen charitable causes. ole joyfuelled...See More- 29 days ago
