Something extra for our grape jelly?
Comments (10)Some good ideas, here -- I'll give them a try! I'm trying to figure out what made the difference in the harvest this year. In previous years there were a fair amount of grapes, but in previous years they were almost all green and painfully sour. Last fall my boss cut the vines waaaaay back, to the main trunk. This spring the vines quickly re-covered 20' of chain link fence, and set double the number of grape clusters. Which, for the first time, all ripened to a nice dark purple. I'm tempted to think the hard cut-back led to the growth spurt and the number of clusters, but the unusually gentle summer weather led to the wonderfully ripe fruit. At least one of those we can replicate next season!...See MoreYellow Jelly Bean v. Yellow Grape
Comments (7)Seedmama, Rhubarb is a perennial in most cooler parts of the country. However, I cannot keep it alive through our July/August heat here, so I grow it as an annual. The variety I grew was from Seeds From Italy (growitalian.com) and I've linked the variety description below. They don't show a varietal name for it, but with it being from an Italian Seed Company, I was hoping it would tolerate our hot weather better. My Rhubarb died in July, and I had it in morning sun/afternoon shade and thought I was keeping it well-watered. Tim loves Rhubarb and I try to grow it for him, but Rhubarb doesn't like me, our soil and our heat! The only rhubarb that has ever come back for me was MacDonald and it returned in 2002 after being planted in 2001. Since then, my life is an exercise in rhubarb futility. I may try it in containers this summer and move it into the air conditioned house when the heat arrives! OkieTim gladly eats whatever I grow, but the things he remembers from his childhood in Pennsylvania and craves (rhubarb, rutabagas, dandelions) are not easy to grow here. I keep trying, though. When you get a good rhubarb harvest let me know and I'll post some great recipes from my "Joy of Rhubarb" cookbook which, sadly, doesn't get much use in this household. I'll send you an interesting selection of tomato seeds via Carol's Seed Swap....you know how I am. I like to throw in a little of this and a little of that in order to help feed my friends' gardening addictions. Comments (10)Unfortunately, I can't think of a way I could help. Back in 1995, veterans were gathering to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of the war. When I volunteered to help, I was contacted by vets looking for buddies they hadn't heard from in decades. I found hundreds of them. It was a wonderful experience. I simply used software that had phone directories for the U.S. It was state-of-the-art at the time, but very ho-hum 12 years later. If I think of anything, I'll let you know. Don't you wish GardenWeb email worked better?...See MoreI'll Love You Forever
Comments (23)I also can not get through "I'll Love You Forever" with out crying. My husband thought I was nuts sitting on the chair reading it to our 2 yo crying my eyes out. But DS loves to look at the pictures. He calls it the "naughty baby book" because our soft cover copy has a picture of the little boy sitting in the bathroom with a mess all around him. BTW, DS was trying to get DH to read it to him and I noticed he could not get very far into it before he told DS t pick another book ;)...See More- last year
