Comments (23)When we moved into our house 27 years ago, hubby just looked at the 1 acre of land and rolled his eyes. "said this is your problem, not mine." I had to remember that he grew up in an apartment and I grew up on a semi-farm. Wasn't long before the saw came out and trees where taken down by hubby and he liked mowing the lawn. Problem was anything and everything was mowed. "oh, I thought it was just a pretty weed." that included $400 worth of blooming daylilies that never came back. Fast forward to 4 years ago when I started wintersowing. He thought I was nuts, but did help out. To his amazement the seed germinated and kept on germinating. The new flowers where an amazement to him, but the mess in the backyard wasn't that great. Second year came and he kept asking "when is the mess outside coming?" He was interested in the mess? OK. But when I started WS, he was right there watching and lending a helping hand when needed. As the containers piled up out back, he remarked "interesting site out back." As more and more containers went out, he says "looking more normal now". Come spring when the seeds started to germinate, he was outside every night checking the germination and asking how many germinated today. Next thing I knew he was getting mulch and spreading it around, digging new beds and I never asked him to. Last year, I was unable to do any gardening most of the year. Hubby had no choice but to do something with all those seedlings and containers. Had help from friends as well, but when the last of the seedlings still had to go out, he was very eager to pitch in. It's just how he did things that was interesting. He ran out of room in the flower beds, so grabbed lots of pots and just filled them with soil and stuffed them in. Balsam impatiens in the top of strawberry jars, 4'clock seedlings in 12 inch pots, 4 seedlings in a pot. etc. He was very proud of himself and I couldn't say anything, just watch and see how they grew. They really did well, and am going to do the same thing this year. This year, he's been helping with the Wintersowing, germination records, spreading bark mulch, buy fresh soil, spreading out more soil, started digging new flower beds, and pushing me to get moving and get the rest of the seedlings in the ground. Instead of loving to mow the lawn, he's ripping out more and more of it and adding more and more flower beds. He groans at lawn mowing now and can recognize a weed from a flower, a plant from a weed. The last trip to the nursery was full of complaints about how weak and unhealthy all the plants looked compared to all the wintersown seedlings and plants "we have". Now he wants to know whe we can start collecting seeds for next years growing. Think I created a monster, but love it anyways. Fran...See More5 people you would like to have lunch with
Comments (47)I'll probably revise this a few times in the next few days, but here are some likely candidates: Tony Scianella, a recent friend of mine who makes the world's finest pool cues (Black Boar), which he sells for anywhere from a few thousand to over $100k each. An absolute mad genius, laughs easily, open-hearted, much fun to be around. I love brilliant and eccentric people. Subcomandante Marcos, the leader, inspirer, and poetic spokesman of the Zapatista movement in southern Mexico. Pretty sure he speaks English. Gimme3Steps, lotta wisdom and spirit and has such a unique way of looking at and putting things Bill(gonefishin), who is sort of an idealized version of my grandpa who's gone, he's like my real grandpa but better - although he's closer to my dad's age I guess. Just gives me good feelings, that guy. My dad, although I'm sure Marcos's ski mask would irritate the hell out of him. We'll just pretend either he understands, or Marcos takes off the mask...... We'd spend lunch talking about Good Food, all this list of people appreciate food more than the ordinary person. Tony collects olive oils (and high-end vodkas), Dad is a wonderful cook who drives all over town to find the best ingredients and cooks 3 fine meals a day, every day, Marcos is deep into traditional indigenous agriculture -- maize biodiversity especially -- in place of factory farming for export, and Gimme & Bill are big into growing the best home produce. And I just LOVE to eat! Yum...See MoreQuaint Town Visit, Garden & Lunch with Anne (pics)
Comments (6)Thanks Teresa.... Well by looking again at the leaves of the plant I photographed and comparing them with those that show up on a Google image search of Ageratum, I see that they are both very similar.....roughly heart-shaped and serrated, whereas the spirea leaves are narrow and lance-shaped. I noticed there are also quite a few different hybrid cultivars of ageratum so this one probably belongs to that family. Closeup of the bush I'm questioning: I guess I can always go back there and ask those gardeners lol. SharonCb...See MoreFavorite family recipe?
Comments (139)Wow...I didn't even know this forum was here! I've been living in the kitchen & building forums. I raised 4 kids & a husband in the 'wilds' of Alaska. We're empty nesters now but I still like to cook in bulk & freeze. Having 4 kids I cooked a lot :) Baked & baked some more. I don't bake anymore & I do miss it but I sure don't need it! :) Anyway, I'd like to join in on the fun & share a few recipes. Thank you, everyone, for such great ideas! I even took a picture of it last year so I'll put it at the bottom. EDAMAME SALAD This is a very easy salad that is so colorful, fresh & low carb. 2 bags shelled Edamame, (soybeans) cooked according to package directions, run cold water over to stop cooking. Note: You can buy shelled Edamame in the freezer section Toasted sesame seeds, if desired Roasted slivered almonds Fresh Italian flat leaf parsley Red bell peppers, diced for color contrast Small cubes of cheese (Habanera Jack, etc.) Grape tomatoes Vinaigrette dressing of choice (I use Balsamic vinegar & Extra-virgin olive oil.) Option: Add some smoked salmon for a more main dish salad Mix all ingredients except nuts & chill. Add nuts just before serving....See More- last yearlast modified: last year
