Plant Swap Day and Time- Vote Please!
Comments (25)Thanks so much for hosting Betty! I skimmed read this and see that the swap is happening next weekend am I correct? Waiting for confirmation on a morning appointment at the opposite end of town so I could be a wee late but planning to come. I'll check to see if the potluck is in favour with everyone. If so and it's about lunch time, I'll bring a pie or 2 of quiche depending on what the final count is. Hopefully I needn't have my appointment that way I can fresh bake the quiche the same morning. Betty - I think we could send you our emails via gardenweb and you can then mass mail everyone back with your address. You'd have to activate that feature in your profile I believe...maybe someone here knows the details of it better than me. I am excited since I've missed this past Spring swap and have never been to a Fall swap....See MoreI have cold feet (pics of plans included)!!
Comments (29)Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond. I can't tell you how helpful it is to get out of my own head on these issues. pam - great input. My realtor said the kitchen definitely needs updating (although she doesn't like the idea of giving up the dining room area) and we just had the house appraised. I know we won't get our money back but we're partly remodeling for us since it looks like we'll be here longer than planned. (Getting 50% back would be ideal)Yes - I did draw in a "hall table" and maybe there is also room for a tiny bench/drop area on the left of the front door if I build a little wall there (full or half). renovator - Overview of the lot is below. We are already past our side setbacks on the back corners which means we could only bumpout in the middle of the back of the house. We did not seriously pursue this given the house's layout (it would effect almost every room on both floors in a weird way) and the fact that there is a raised flagstone patio along the back of the house (with steps down to a small lawn) which is one of its nicer points. The yard is small but a nice point of the house and with 3 kids we use it. ANd we knew we were updating the kitchen so to rip out both ends of the house sounded $$$. The "views" are mainly from the back of the house. The front of the house is close to a street and not too private, but we had space to push out on the porch and a little on one side of the house which this plan uses. House is 2 stories on a hill (bottom levels has office, bath and family room with french doors to patio). Hill slopes down from right to left on these plans and from front of house to back. I am having trouble uploading an elevation. And what kind of pictures would help? Interiors? Here is a pic of the house: kirkhall - thanks for your vote and for encouraging me to push the full bath! I can't tell you how exciting it is to contemplate not sharing a bathroom with 3 children... elizawhyza - Talk to me about the box window...the original plan (if you scroll up to my first post) actually has a box bumpout of 1.5 feet (with a bay window) that the table is moved towards. The reason I changed it to bay in this version was 1) I centered the table (for several reasons) and 2) I lost my island stools and I really wanted a seating option that was NOT the table for people to "hang" in the kitchen. I also thought I could build in storage underneath the window seat and also use it as an end banquette if ever necessary for bigger dinners. But - do you think it would really make the space feel bigger to do a box window? What would you put in that space? I will definitely play with the island size. I can't go longer than 4 feet parallel to table but I can go down to 2 or 2.5 feet across and would definitely consider that for more room for 5 people to get around in there... Appreciate all your comments!! Keep them coming......See MoreChange In Plans
Comments (11)Our whole family was here last weekend to celebrate DHs birthday. Just the 3 kids, 2 grandkids, son-in-law and older son's fiance. Every bed in the house was full with one grandson in a sleeping bag on the floor. It was wonderful. Our younger son surprised his father by flying in from Oslo where he is working until Thanksgiving. We no longer go out to eat as a group, which would be easier, because the soon to be 2 year old grandson doesn't do too well. So we had oven baked pork ribs prepared with onions and peppers, au gratin potatoes, green beans almondine, wine, cake and ice cream and pre dinner cocktails our older son brought to mix in his cocktail shaker: Gordon's Cups. They all spent the night and the next day I babysat the grandsons while the others went out for breakfast at Coco's. Had a nice lunch of cold meatloaf sandwiches and then DD headed back home with her family for an early dinner and bedtime. On Monday, DHs actual birthday, our younger son took us to a fancy breakfast at the Montage in Laguna Beach; we ate on a balcony overlooking the ocean. Then he treated the rest of us to a fancy dinner that night in Newport Beach. On Tuesday, he flew back to Oslo via Zurich while the rest of the family went back to their usual routines. All this was to give a special celebration for DHs 70th birthday. Having family around us is the best gift there is....See MoreWhat Are Your Plans For Thanksgiving?
Comments (32)We will celebrate with my family on the Sunday before, there are 6 of us and our oldest brother is coming home with his wife so it will be the first time in several years that we will celebrate all together. We're going to my younger brother's new home, I'll make fruited wild rice dressing with dried apricots and cherries, it's yummy. I'll also bring a corn pudding as it's become a favorite. My family will eat pretty much anything and are willing to try new things. On Thanksgiving day we will host my husbands family. I enjoy their company but they are boring when it comes to food. Always the same thing, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn. Husband's mom always made the dressing, very bland and mushy - not my favorite. She passed away a couple of years ago so now I can atleast do my dressing. Sister in law will do green bean casserole. They don't like change but I usually try to introduce them to something new. This year I think it will be beets and carrots as my garden here in Southeast Wisconsin is still going. I have it under hoops and we are still getting carrots, beets, peas, lettuces and kohlrabi. They won't do sweet potatoes at all. Boring. We will smoke the turkey if the weather permits....See More- 6 months agolast modified: 6 months ago
