The Boars Head Recall

last year

Somehow I’ve known about this, seen products removed from the deli cases, but not truly paid attention.

Today I went to buy roast beef, asked for 2/3 pound. A man behind me asked the clerk, “What brand is that?” Clerk said, “Store brand.” Not thinking about the recall, I was a little surprised because Boars Head is the default. “Which is safer, store brand or Boars Head?” the man asked. “Not allowed to say.” I said, “I hope you’re slicing the safer one for me.” “I’ll put it this way, I’m slicing what I’d slice for myself.”

I didn’t mention this to my wife until after lunch when she asked what brand I bought and told me how the news keeps getting worse for Boars Head.

I’ve now skimmed an article and am a little upset. I’ve always thought of them as the upscale, preferred brand. From cocktail franks to Black Forest ham to balogna, pickles and more, I’m always seeking them out for these kinds of things. Not just a name thing, I actually by far prefer many of their products.

This isn’t a case of something got contaminated. It sounds like chronic violations for blatant filth.

Can the brand recover from this? I don’t know if and how it will, for me.
