I saw that recall info. I don't buy their product, preferring organic lunchmeats for the rare occasions I buy it. But I think any corporation processed meat is risky.

All over the news, again. I have always avoided BoarsHead. BigGrocery corporate junk.

Every 3-4 months or so, i'll roast a pork loin, a small ham, roast a couple chickens, a beef roast....in rotation.

A nice Sunday meal. The rest sliced for a sandwich but mostly in small food saver freezer packs for later soups/noodle bowls and a random sandwich.

Way too many recalls lately from chia seeds, sesame seeds, peppercorns...

I am such a Sherlock when researching where our food comes from. As local as possible and best if they do in-house testing.

I get food safety topics in my newsfeed. There have been a number of recalls lately, and Boars Head is just one - and pretty serious.

They're not all that much better than other brands, just more heavily promoted, IMO.

I prefer to buy food as whole as possible. Increasingly I am suspicious and not trusting of most things processed.

I dont even want to eat raw vegetables from the store anymore, especially leafy greens. There are periodically deaths from them and I have heard some of the stories of people who have been affected and it can cause horrific things to happen to the human body.

Cold cuts are a waste of the food dollar, they are not healthy to eat and you never know how they got there.

i read that the walls were coated with meat residue! How could that possibly happen? It is probably a little less gory than my imagination is conjuring up, but still unacceptable.

Processed meats are but a blast of salt, fat and some seasonings of a questionable nature.

They are also very expensive and provides no real nutrition to speak of.

Because Boars Head has such a reputation as a premium cut, it has to come to a hard fall. How could they come back from this?

It may seem mean to say this, but someone's head has got to roll on this one . Those inspectors were not doing their job, for what ever reason. The most obvious suspicion would be kick backs for them. Maybe several heads need to roll on this!

I say a pox on most deli meats!!! Nasty stuff, for the most part.

I agree of course that deli meats aren’t the healthiest thing, and that they’re expensive. But there’s really no substitute for deli turkey when you want a deli turkey sandwich, etc. BH’s black forest ham (now smokemaster I think) is the only deli ham I buy, and going back to when my daughter was on a balogna kick (yeah I know) she'd recognize and refuse to eat any other brand. As frustrating as that was, I couldn't disagree.

Anyway, truth be told I fortunately don't buy this stuff often. Two sandwiches worth every couple months at most. But this also means there's not much opportunity to experiment with other brands, so it's sad to lose a "reliable" favorite.

Boars head brand was unknown to me honestly until the recent news coverage. But to my surprise last week my local grocery store filled their deli case filled with a large selection of boars head products in place of our normal deli brands. I'm wondering if they got a discount price on all those boars head deli meats?? They never offered that brand before. They even had a lady giving out free samples of the boars head deli meats in front of the deli. And I never seen that before! The brand must be struggling, not surprising due to the news coverage. I will not be buying any of it. I want our usual brands to return again but its all boars head in the deli case right now. My husband asked the store manager about the boars head deli meat and asked if it was safe. Manager said he called and asked and was told it was ok to eat. We are still not buying it.

I agree--my perception had been that Boar's Head was supposed to be higher quality. And I agree that there's a place, especially in the sandwich world, for deli sliced. It doesn't have to have weird stuff in it. I don't have a good handle of what "processed" means. Deli cuts are saltier, for sure, but one balances that out with the other sandwich ingredients. I always have a little in the house, but it's Applegate, True Story or Diestel. No weird ingredients, and the salt is just regular salt.

I have gone out of my way to buy Boar's Head at Kroger, where I don't do my weekly shopping. But the violations at the Virginia plant are horrifying. Maybe it's just that one plant though.

Their deli meats are too expensive for me now, and I don't enjoy a sandwich of cold cuts in general, so it's been over a year since I've bought it. But it's the only brand that makes real American cheese with the tiny holes in it, which is the cheese for grilled cheese. I wonder where their cheese is processed.

I just went to their website to get more details. It is only the Jarratt, Virginia plant involved. It was found in their liverworst, but anything cut on the same slicer was suspect. That plant is closed until all safety issues are corrected. A USDA inspector was at the plant daily, so sounds like they weren't doing their job.

I was so dissapointed to learn about this as this is the only deli brand I buy. They have deli meats that are nitrate free as well as other diet restrictions (low sodium, etc). I don't eat deli meat that often, but do occasionally want a deli turkey sandwich and I do like their slicing cheeses, also for sandwiches.

I think they recalled 9 million pounds of meat that was processed at this plant. The deaths are now at 11 with over 57 people hospitalized in something like 18 states. This company has been around since 1905.

I always thought I was getting the better product when i bought Boars Head. After reading the decription of that facility in the south, i will never buy it again. I dont buy many cold cuts anyway. My fancy grocery store has their own brand so if i buy anything I buy that.

Yes, and you never know WHO makes the store stuff. It could very well be Boar’s Head….

^^^^^Except it isn't just cold meats. It seems like something is being recalled fairly often anymore. Canteloupe is quite often a culprit as well as lettuce, cukes and other vegetables and fruit. I'm not ready to give it all up yet, but I do need to research how to wash the rinds of melon and veggies before cutting to avoid contaminating the inside in the process.

I've never had any of the Boar's Head products because they are more expensive than anything else in our local stores and neither Elery nor I care for the deli type meats. I may be the only person in the world that doesn't much like cheese either, LOL.

Like Sleevendog I'll roast a chicken or high heat roast a top round and slice that for sandwiches. My youngest daughter used to love a bologna and cheese sandwich but thankfully she would eat Eckrich or whatever I could get locally as our small town grocery store didn't even have a deli back then!

I can't even imagine what this company is going to have to do to resurrect their reputation, and that's if they don't get sued by the families involved. Buyer beware, I guess.
