Bird houses - do I even bother?
Comments (18)Terry, maybe you're right, and I certainly hope you are, but it has not been my experience. House sparrows are very opportunistic, and they are fierce competitors with native birds for nesting sites and food. Because they didn't evolve with the birds who are native to this ecosystem, natives are unprepared physically to compete with them. Any non-native species whether it is a plant or animal has the potential of outcompeting and outpopulating the natives. It is the natural way of it. This is seen across the country with plants, fish, etc. Some examples are the uproar over kudzu or snakehead fish. House sparrows (and starlings for that matter) will kill other birds and destroy their eggs and nestlings. They will also build right on top of their dead bodies. I am not trying to be graphic here. I am speaking from experience and would not want anyone else to have to find such a thing. I wish someone had warned me! I know that house sparrows are doing what is natural to them. It is because of this that I don't find house sparrows annoying, I just don't want them becoming the only species in my yard. Left unchecked, I know that is what they will do. They tend to nest earlier than most natives claiming nesting sites before natives have a chance. From the sialis website cited above "HOSP [house sparrows] are prolific breeders. They may raise 2-5 (average of 3) clutches of 3-7 (very seldom less than 4) chicks each breeding season, (averaging 20 chicks per season). One pair can theoretically quintuple the population in one year. Using some conservative assumptions, one pair could increase to 1,250 birds in 5 years. Eggs are incubated for 10-16 days, and nestlings are fully feathered in 15-17 days." Pigeons, starlings and house sparrows have become the only birds that you see in cities. That is because of human sprawl, but also because they outcompete the natives. Lack of species diversity is an indication of an unhealthy ecosystem. Each species within the system has a job to do and so is an integral cog in the wheel. Good luck to you. I hope you find that you are right. Comments (34)What drive me nuts is when reading real estate listings (I am an agent) someone will invariably write "parkay" floors. I always think of how awfully slippery they must be! They also misspell other commonly used words in our field and I am afraid that the new versions will somehow take hold. Think of good old duct tape. It is now duck tape and commonly labeled that way. I typo all the time and even had to go back to the word "typo" to correct it, lol. However, I do try to catch mine. I see people on FB all the time who seem to make no attempt at spelling or grammar. Frequently they are in college or recently graduated, so you would think they'd have learned by now (my peers' children). I think by the time I was 10 or so, I had a pretty decent grip on the English language. I hate to sound crotchety, but kids these days...... I do my best with our sons (7.5 & 9), but it is an uphill battle with all the errors I catch while watching tv, surfing the web, reading professionally made signs, etc... The younger generation is bombarded with poor examples everywhere they look!...See MoreCabinet errors: what would you do?
Comments (41)They pressured me to pick a stucco color to match existing from a 1" square. The stucco lady left trash in my garbage, didn't clean up her mess, and her tools and equipment have been left haphazardly all over my property for weeks now. Including one time leaving a tool bag of shears and sharp tools on my patio chair within reach of my kids for 4 days. Left on Friday, didn't return until Tues. She wants to charge me $50 per stucco sample. She sent this email to my contractor "Is that the only sample she wants because I'm not gonna come back day after day to put a different sample up." She took no effort to match my existing color and wants to charge me $50 per sample. They had my original stucco color for months, said it can't be color matched and is discontinued... She is upset because I asked them to ask her to clean up her equipment because she isn't scheduled to return until 2 weeks! I contacted the manufacturer directly today. They will send me 12 x 12 actual samples for free and a sample of the updated formula of my original stucco. Said if none of those worked, they would color match. Needless to say, I told them I'll get my own samples. Wow! This has been like this for 3 weeks now since she hasn't returned to finish. It's been raining off and on but there were several days of sun in between. Ripped out my shrubs and threw them on my property Knocked out my light...See MoreDon't Bother Reading this Post if You "Never Watch TV"
Comments (34)I record most of what we watch, but we also watch shows using our antenna that the cable service neglects to provide for us. Last week-end I discovered that we get a "Surf" channel from our antenna - all surf, all the time, complete with surf music, which I like. I haven't seen any commercials on that channel, but that might change, as I think it is a new channel. We get three times as many PBS channels through our antenna as we do through cable, and I watch a lot of those - except for the Kids channels. I mute all commercials that I cannot FF through. I remember back in the 1950s and early 1960s when commercials used to be entertaining, especially the ones for Jax Beer:...See More- last yearlast modified: last year
