Furniture living room Design Dilemma

small apartment lots of company - need more seating

For now, i can only seat 5 - I think i need an accent chair beside the cabinet under the TV. What color would you recommend so room does not look too cluttered or a big mismatch?
The focus is on the blue sofa and the pendants and the backsplash. Should I get a white chair or some tone of blue? I am lost - reaching out for your advice. Thank you.

Do you really need to storage of the TV cabinet? If not, I would remove it. Lower the TV a bit (it is too high), and put an upholstered bench underneath it that could be pulled out from the wall for more guest seating.

Search for "end of bed bench" or you could use two small upholstered stools lined up next to each other. I think it is fine to bring more beige, brown, grey, or blue into the room. Some extra texture would be nice as well, like wood legs to tie in with your wood stools.

A bench is a good idea. Also, if you have a dining room, you can bring those chairs into the living room when you have company instead of permanently crowding the room. You need a rug in your living room. :-)

What a gorgeous home! And I LOVE the fabric. If the chairs are good quality and comfortable, I'd definitely do it. Twelve yds is probably not enough for four chairs, but people has posted examples here of mixing fabrics on chairs, and it can look great. For example, use the japan-inspired fabric on the backs of chair, and use another fabric for heavy-use cushions and inside back. Once you add a coffee table and rug, I think the scale will look more reasonable. Re: bar for six, you could roughly double the depth of the bar and add a seat at either end. Of course, that would involve some cost, but not much if choose e.g. wood as the top piece. Depending on how much room you need to walk behind the bar, you might even be able to do something larger, with a curve to it.

nancy-- thank you! And yes, so true . . .so fast! lazy-- I agree with everything you've said. Those things have bothered me as well. Most of the books sticking out I can't change, but someday I will (when the kids are older). I have been looking for larger pieces for the FP and other wall for a long time, ditto for what goes on the FP. Just too hard to find things without a lot of shopping trips to the flea market, and I rarely get to do that! The curtains will change eventually, too. Now I can go in a totally different direction with color, when I have the time and $! val, I see where you are going with the FP but there isn't enough room to do that (such a small room). If I can someday get an ottoman I will remove the table! amj, I will get that pic up for you soon. It does not really look built in though . . .it is nowhere near what I'd like it to look like in terms of how it is arranged, either. lori, thank you-- you rooms have always been very inspirational to me. flower, I would like the floor length idea but not sure how it would work with the chairs against the wall . . .no room to push them far enough out so that the curtains would not be smooshed. Ideas? Thank you again, everyone!!

Are you looking for some ideas to decorate the kitchen or increase its functionality or both? How much do you each cook? Do you like to cook and cook a lot, do you like to cook and not have much time, do you eat out, do you heat up takeout? Since you just moved to NYC, I would live in the apartment and use the kitchen for a few more months before making any changes or adding anything. You'll have a better idea by then of how you use/want to use the space, you might see something you like in your daily travels that you want to buy, you might check out a neighbor's apartment in the same line and get some ideas, etc. With the holidays coming, you might also want to talk to friends and family who are looking for gift ideas for you, because that might help to increase your options if you're on a budget. You could maybe blow up some of your photographs (including from IG if you or your husband have accounts) either from NYC or from wherever you're originally from and hang them on the wall over the little cart. Personal photos that are special to you both will be more personal than anything you can buy and will liven up the area too. PS I'm with eld6161 -- I grew up in a NYC apartment and lived there after college too, and that's a good size kitchen with VERY decent storage : ) .

Thanks @decoenthusiaste. Unfortunately, the bed doesn't fit in the closet space and we need the bedside tables for our CPAP machines so the closet around the bed option is also not workable. I've had to compromise the closet space (yet 215cm is not so small) for increased storage space in the kitchen next to the fridge for supplies, brooms, and a vacuum. I've been trying to find a solution for the computer storage, something like a cubby to push it into but that takes up table space. I've already asked the kitchen company if they can add a pull-out table like this to the top drawer of the closest cabinet so we can sit across from each other when the weather is not so great.

Would the sofa fit in front of the window? If not, is there a matching loveseat? Would the two chairs be moved so that the backs are facing the "hall"? The loveseat and the sofa would be at right angles.

Thank you kandrewspa, i have been bringing in the dining chairs but i thought that it would be easier to place an accent chair in the room. I interpret your comment that this would permanently crowd the room.
Is that the risk with the extra chair? I had a swivel chair in mind as a potential that is narrower than the space available beside the cabinet. Kendrah , I love the idea of a bench instead of a cabinet but the storage is essential. If it seems to be too much i will have to reconsider. Thank you all for the alternatives. You are the inspiration i am looking for.
