They are expecting a large voter turnout here in Kansas City because there is a ballot initiative for a 3/8 cent sales tax to fund a new downtown stadium for the Royals and to renovate the Chief's current stadium. That vote is only for one county. Not much else on the ballots except local city councils and such.

ooh. I did that once but not a full day. I think it was maybe 4 or 6 hours. It was moderately busy and it was ok. Where we are now, they have split the shifts even shorter because that is a painfully long day. Well.. hope you brought some good reading with you?

Our primary is in a few weeks, and at least there are some contested races ( senate for one, and local offices as well) but the mail in voting has become my way.

You're a good soul FOAS. Thank you for volunteering. My dad used to be what was called the voting machine "custodian", back in the dark ages when they had those huge metal voting machines with the levers that you toggled to vote. One person from each party had to be present to set up the machines, fix any issues which arose during the day, and then to count the votes at the end of the day.

It was a loooong day for him too. :)

Thanks Ally De, but I can’t let the ”thank you” stand without clarifying it’s a paid position. I had heard they were short on workers so I signed up, so yes I’m doing it to help, not for the money. I believe the shortage is why we don’t do shifts. My father volunteered years ago when they still had voter books!

We had our first live one come through the door! But it turns out he was at the wrong location so we sent him on his way.

Salonva, I just have my phone. It’s funny, when I’m at hope doing something productive I always catch myself on my phone. Now that all I have is my phone to keep me occupied, it’s painful!

The vote is expected to be very close. It is actually a 30 year extension of the same 3/8 cent tax that was passed in 2006 to renovate both stadiums. There are alot of people that don't want a new stadium for the Royals and/or don't like the selected location in the Crossroads district. If the vote were just for the Arrowhead renovation it would pass easily and that sentiment may carry the day.

I don't live in Jackson county, MO so I don't get a vote. If the vote doesn't pass the Chiefs and the Royals may both move across the state line into Kansas which is fine by me. Let Kansans pay for it.

That is a tough one when you are voting on something already decided. Why is the primary so late in the year I wonder? Of course it was decided almost from the get go. But thank you for manning the polls. I would like to do it but I have a dog who can't wait 14 hours........ I wish they could make it in shifts.

Being a volunteer at the polls was something I’d intended to do after retirement but it is a longer day than i care to put in and i have regular commitments on tuesday. i do appreciate those that give their time.

Well, you could make a protest vote. That's what I'll do when our meaningless primary rolls around in May.

I did that once years ago and it was the longest day of my life. I was ready for lunch and it was only 9 AM..

I'm not sure my area has voting locations, I don't think I've been to one in the last 15 years. I either don't vote or vote by mail. Probably those two in the same order about 70/30.

A thousand years ago in my childhood my mother always "worked" at the local polling place on elections days. This was obviously back when the ballots were counted manually by those people after closing time and then phoned in. I recall her saying that she did it for patriotic reasons (she was a WW2 Army vet) and that it was a good way to catch up on neighborhood gossip.

I did that for years. Would do it again but can't drive in the dark anymore and its dark both coming and going.

You may not find this entertaining, but interesting. I was given $30 to spend any way I wanted to on Amazon. I bought a pound of chocolate, and I still had to pay another $20. I could have bought that pound of chocolate in person for a little more than $20 four or five years ago. Well maybe not even interesting, but it took my breath away! Good way to lose weight, since I can't have this chocolate very often. Yeah, that's it.

Hi! We gave had eight voters so far. So about 1% of the 836 in this election district.

Looking up this district I see it leans slightly R but not too far from an even split. Statistically insignificant, but it still stands out that just of the eight was a D. Coincidentally, my high school GF's mom. 🙂

I suppose it's now done, hope all went well. It's an important job and should be compensated, IMO.

Our primary was 2 weeks ago - our building is a polling place and it was a primary for one party only - plus closed. Turnout was really low. Afterwards, they post paper receipts of the number of votes cast. Usually there are really long ones and this time there were only 2 little short ones

LoneJack, did the 3/8 make it? DDand I were in KC over the past weekend visiting my DGD. Went to the KC Current game at their new stadium. Wow! Small but nicely done. Still some work and improvements to do but it is a great asset for KC.

Nope, it got trounced 58% to 42%. Now the teams will have to figure out their plan B. They both still have leases at the current stadiums until 2031.

The company I work for has the naming rights for the KC Current's new stadium.

I just saw this post and sorry I didn’t see it yesterday! I too serve as an election judge. We live in a very rural area and had a turnout of 39 voters in the precinct to which I am assigned (out of a possible 259 registered voters) yesterday. Minor issues on the ballots including school board elections and a countywide tax initiative.

For sure a very long day. I got up at 4 am to get the polls open by 6 am, closed the polls at 7 pm, and then traveled to the county courthouse to deliver the ballots, voting machine tally tapes, etc. We judges do not leave the polling place at all during the day.

My pay is $125, no meal allowance and no mileage. Every election I tell myself I’m not doing it again, but then I do.

Today is for resting. Following with interest the defeat of the Kansas City tax issue regarding the KC Chiefs and Royals stadiums.
