Making two rooms out of a living room with vaulted ceiling
Comments (19)I agree about consulting an architect or a designer who can work up a scale drawing including perspectives. That said, the ~ 8 foot ceiling was the standard for decades (and still is in much construction), and people have been perfectly content in reasonably sized rooms with 8 foot ceilings. I think the need for extra tall ceiling heights, particularly these near double height spaces, is grossly overstated in modern architecture. I live in a building with 14' ceilings and 23 foot (approximate length) parlors. This is a Very high ceiling. The floor I lived on with the 10 foot ceilings was a much more human scale for an interior, and 8.5 - 9 would have been adequate too, without the ornamental ceilings....See Morebonus room over garage or should we get rid of vaulted living room
Comments (7)We have a two story foyer and a regular 10' ceiling in our great room which is in view of foyer...it looks fine. As far as whether to do the playroom over the great room vs over the garage, for me there would be several factors to take into consideration. 1. Like cpartist said, a lot would depend on the floor plan upstairs. 2. I like the 16 x 18 dimensions better than the 12 x 25....I don't think long narrow rooms are as easy to use or decorate. Plus, I would imagine the natural light would be better in the 16 x 18 space. 3. To me, the only drawback to having the playroom over the great room would be the thumping from activity. My ds plays vigorous indoor bball games with friends, and my dd is a tumbler. I am grateful the floor space is well insulated, but still hear the occasional thump. 4. Could you make the space over the great room, and leave the space over the garage unfinished? That way you leave all of your options open. I really think you will prefer not having a 2 story great room, regardless....See MoreShould I keep plan to Arch windows and Beam in Vaulted living room?
Comments (20)Celerygirl-Thanks! I could have totally done a Super modern home or even a really cool Spanish style home! Love the photos you posted...although I’ve had my interior figured out/dreamt about for quite awhile now. ;) Rmsaustin-I might not do arched on the exterior...it adds quite a bit of cost...and I’m not sure that I want the curves there. I’m ok with doing straight outside and arched inside. On 75 acres and 1/4 mile off the road, nobody will know the difference anyway..lol. I didn’t really care about the kitchen design being laid out on the draft. I am pretty picky and knew I would change it anyway. I am doing a large Rangetop on the left wall (against the pantry). Double wall ovens at that lower left corner of the kitchen before the “bar” space. Double drawer fridge under island facing Rangetop for often used cooking items like butter, diced onions/peppers/etc. NO sink or dishwasher in island...just workspace. A much larger sink (48 inches) at window with DW on either side. Column fridge/freezer as well as a baking center on the right wall. Fridge will be sort of by the corner, so it opens into the intersection of both aisles. Bar space will have coffee/tea center, microwave (popcorn). I did find out when I started laying out pantry that I should have made it bigger...lol. Decided against changing plan for an even larger pantry anyway. Basement will have a cold storage pantry under front porch. My last Garden was 40*60...I’m going larger this time, dreaming of a huge greenhouse, and have a 3 acre spot for my orchard. I can’t wait do do lots of canning..so need a lot of storage for my supply of farmtotable food. :) There is an exterior door between the pantry/bar that will go do a 12*18 covered outdoor kitchen (as well as larger deck). So lots of focus on eating here! I have my family on a very healthy diet..and having space to spread out so we can all cook will be awesome. My 14,13,10 year olds all cook/bake. The oldest wants to make/sell goat soap, so I’m sure I will be wishing the kitchen was larger in no time! :)...See Moretwo story living room vs vaulted living room
Comments (23)I've got one these right now. It's a beautiful space, but temperature regulation is an issue. Watching TV is an issue, too. The sound is lost in the room and we have to turn the volume up quite a bit to hear. As a retired appraiser, it makes more financial sense to floor the second story portion. While not a wow factor choice, it increases your useable square footage and will result in a corresponding increase in valuation. The point is, there are a lot more factors involved and unintended results of the decision to go with a 2-story high space....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
