Final layout - would like advise on laundry room/mudrom layout
Comments (16)Marthaelena I tried to post to you yesterday, but didnt realize after I posted to Anne that I couldnt post again, so here were some answers to your previous post The sketches were done in paint and I really had no clue how to draw it out so it definitely is not done to scale. I was just trying to capture the idea of what I was thinking of. I did measure the bathroom and know I needed to keep it at least 5' so wasn't sure if that would work without taking more space out of the office because I'll need some sort of hallway there. Would love to see what you sketched if you can post it. I posted our plan. If you were referring to the space where Anne mentioned the closet should go, it is a hallway. I'm not sure I would like the closet out in the hallway. Id like to keep that in the mudroom to have access to it without having to track stuff in the hallway. Now, I cant describe how thankful I am that you were able to capture what I want. Thank You!! Love your new design (and so does my husband). It captures everything I wanted and I think probably the only thing that will really work there giving the size. I do wish and agree that my laundry room could be longer (or wider), but wider wont work if I keep the mudroom bench (which I want). Not sure how much more I can take out of the office without it looking odd and would it be odd to have your laundry room across the whole front of your house? I would prefer not to, but I didnt want a formal dining or living room because I knew wed never use it, so that is how we filled in that spot. I just didnt want to come in the front door and be right in our great room. I wanted a foyer. Not sure what other design would look good unless I extended the laundry room and made a closet on the other side by the foyer (take out the current closet at the foyer) and make the front half of the room an office. Since you moved the garage door down some is there room to put a small shelf there for things to drop off/pick up etc when going out the door or for charging cell phones, etc.? Or maybe I could put it at the end of my bench. I will leave the wall up by the basement. I think it looks nicer too. Anne (or marthaelena see notes below) Thanks for looking over the plan and for the reminder about the plumbing dryer duct. Ill make note to remember that (which is why I should increase the space a little). My girlfriends builder didnt think of that and her LR is only 5 and it is pulled out away from her wall so you can barely get in from the garage. I did not like a 20 inch door on the toilet area of the master bathroom, but wasnt sure what else to do there. We wanted a larger shower, which is now too big IMO, but not sure how else to rearrange the bathroom to get the most use out of our space. I wanted a larger closet. We originally had a closet where the pantry is, but took that away so I could have a walk in pantry. Maybe since the kitchen is so big we could move the pantry back into the kitchen. I didnt like the fact that I had to walk around the sink area and past the master bedroom to get to it, but again, not sure what else to do there. Any suggestions/drawings on those two areas? The draftsmen told us he left the shower and toilet area the way it was because of the angle together. Anne would still love to see your drawing of the 1st option you suggested. Not sure if that would give me more or less room. Can you post or email to me at cmill1if@gmail.com Any other suggestions/change to the plan? Our outside has double gables over the garage and double gables over the front bedroom with stone and hardiplank mix....See MoreWhich laundry/mudroom layout works better?
Comments (8)Alicia, the "WC" is the water closet, or toilet room. Not silly at all to ask . . . I'm the original "what does that mean" person!! By folding table, I actually meant a table for folding clothes, not that the table itself folds. I'll take a photo as soon as I can . . . right now the W/D are in the middle of the room so trim carpenters can finish behind it. Here's another idea: Would you consider putting the actual closet in the garage? You and your guys could keep current coats/jackets on the hooks behind the bench, and use the closet for storing out-of-season things. If you removed the closet from the mud room, it would open up lots more space for both laundry and benches. In our last house, we had a wall rack for grubby outerwear in the garage, and liked the idea so much that we're repeating it in this house, adding a bench under the rack so we can get rid of gardening & yardwork jackets and boots before ever entering the house. This bench will be very utilitarian -- no glamour at all! Just inside the side entrance, we'll have a more finished, nice bench with beadboard backing and places for normal outerwear. We loved keeping really nasty stuff confined to the garage. My last laundry room had a deep plastic utility sink, which was okay but it stained easily. This time my countertop people had a couple of Kohler SS single-bowl sinks that they'd bought for a display and never used -- they gave me such a good price that I felt like I was stealing them!! I'm using one of them in the laundry room. I should be able to get a photo of my folding table tomorrow or Tuesday -- check back then....See Morelaundry room layout

Comments (40)I'd still be concerned about your mother and a walker in the bathroom. How much room is there between the shower and the toilet? Plus where will grab bars go? There's so much extra room around the space that you'll need to put in floor grab bars which are a heck of a lot uglier than coming in and seeing a toilet. I do agree about the doorway into the guest room. However I don't like where she placed it because now you are limited where you can put the bed and I think the solution is worse. The width of the bedroom is 10'8" or 128" wide. Putting the bed between the wall and the closet on the window side (so the foot of the bed faces the entry door), means you now only have 68" of space if you use a queen sized bed. (A queen mattress is 60" wide) So that means now your mother only has 34" of walking space. Not even a full 3" on either side of the bed. If there's a bed frame, then it's even less. If you place the bed on the left wall you only have 126" and you need 3' for the door swing. So now whoever is on the window side of the room has even less space to move around. So while it solves the problem of the two doors, it really creates another problem because of the bed. By keeping all doors on one side, and keeping the original size of the bedroom, the bed can be placed between the windows because the original room width was 11' or 132". That gives a full 3' on each side of the bed. Also note that clothes don't turn corners in closets. That's the reason I left that area blank. It can be hanging for things like ties or belts, etc....See Moreptreckel
