Induction cooktop under counter

If you have an induction cooktop mounted UNDER your counter, I'd love to hear your thoughts on your experience with it. Pros/cons? Would you do it again? What would you change? We are looking to renovate our kitchen and are thinking of installing 2 or 3 individual high powered burners at 2 different spots on the island so that we can be multiple cooks working together.

You mean like this? https://invisacook.com they only work with particular countertop materials (it really was designed for porcelain/sintered stone) which there are not a huge population of good fabricators for in the us; not sure what the service coverage would be like either as they are uncommon. Replacing it in the future could be hard too vs a drop in unit.

There are some threads on here about this. Invisacook does not get a good rating. Other competing products TSP? and Cooking Surface Prime? appear to work better because materials are incorporated into the countertop itself. Search for those threads. Gaggenau is also introducing one that will initially only be in Europe and Middle East.

Great idea. I'm not sure the tech is there yet, so I passed and am just installing induction. Gaggenau and Thermador have induction without the circles on them--you can place a pot anywhere on the surface and unit adjusts to that location. You still see the induction cooking unit top, but life is trade offs.

We have a Thermador induction cooktop and downdraft (Bosch twin, Bosch made) in our kitchen island. Just now measured countertop and it is 33 1/8" deep, on a base cabinet that is 30 1/2" deep (this does not include doors, just the cabinet itself.) Island had to be that deep to handle specs of cooktop & downdraft. I hope this helps. If there is any way you can configure an overhead exhaust, do it. The downdraft unit is very inefficient (rather lame, really), but better than nothing. We had no other option. Editing this post because it occurred to me that our actual cabinet/island depth might be deeper than necessary because we did a full kitchen remodel last year and we had the cabinets use the same footprint. I think what happens is that you just won't get the portable out to boil water. We lived for about 6 months without the kitchen. Our el-cheapo portable induction was a life saver and I thought I would use it to boil water and cook stuff in summer. I have yet to get it out of the drawer where it lives (18 months so far). I did get an outdoor stove with two 30k btu burners that I am really liking and using a lot - even in this heat wave. I like cooking outside. Somehow, its ok to tote all the food outside but to get the induction gizmo out of a drawer. I have no experience with the Capital, but the burner designs resemble each other somewhat. I am not claiming equivalence in any way but a lot of heat, straight up from a lot of small jets. I never turn it all the way up, even to boil water - it sounds like a jet engine when I do that. At medium, its more than twice as fast as the POC range in my kitchen at doing anything. If I got to re-choose with money as no object, I think I would get a induction top and a solid plate or Teppanyaki style griddle - those would cover about 90% of my cooktop needs. Small funny story - I didn't realize that it was even possible to get a pan hot enough to spontaneously ignite oil - but guess what, I can! lmao. Also, my cutting board that fits over the prep sink just fits over a burner :)

White/light countertop and black induction cooktop

Thank you everyone. We are taking the plunge and getting the luce di luna quartz on the island with the Miele induction cooktop in black. Our island cabinets are a very dark stained cherry and our permimeter will be white with a dark green granite countertop. All of your kitchens are so beautiful and so different. Ice, your contemporary look is great. Although it's not the traditional one that I'm doing it all fits together and I'm trying to have faith that my vision of a traditional kitchen will look as pulled together as your contemporary one. Redroze, I can't believe your lanterns---they are almost exactly what I have picked for my kitchen---two and not three as everyone recommends. The two just seemed right in my space. lsandler, your kitchen is so cozy looking even though the space looks big and I like the way the cooktop looks on your granite. All of the advice has been encouraging and now I'll just hold my breath until it's all put together. Pictures someday but I'm afraid all the subs will be on party time until January. Thanks again.

Either setup can work and I would choose the best based on function, not form. One thing you should be aware of is that you have to respect the required clearances between the oven and cooktop, which means an oven under a cooktop will likely be lower to the ground than an range oven is. Although it may be okay to lift something off the oven's rack, you'll likely find that having a (hot) door that pretty much opens onto the floor is an annoyance. Another consideration is whether or not you prefer to stand in front of an oven that is venting warm air onto you while you are tending to a cooktop.

i think there is plenty of room with a 36” cooktop for 2 cooks - i don’t think they need to be spread out and its easier for one cook to use hobs that are close together. no opinion on invisacook other than having read mediocre reviews.

Here’s a thread with some input from someone who did some tests on how long it takes to boil water, and also from someone who likes theirs. As mentioned above there are other threads as well so it’s worth a search.

Another option is to draw the cooktop out proud of the usual linear format of a straight counter. Do that enough and the burners become accessible from each side. Counter and cabinet finishing would be needed with a good sized work zone for each.

I like the idea of having it as a sort of built-in warming tray. Expensive idea to replace a $20 warming tray but would be very cool at house parties to have.
