Thanks for the response. I understand that you have to have 4" clearance between the two but where the clearance is measured from is what we are unsure of. I don't have the oven yet, so if it's square that question won't matter it will be the same. I'm trying to measure the front of the cabinet where we can't seem to get 4" with a standard cabinet. He is telling me we have a 4" toekick + a 3/4" base + a 28" cutout from the ground up which does not leave 4" to the top of the countertop. He is thinking once installed we would have 4" in between them inside the cabinet if we only have 3 1/4" on the face of the cabinet. I'm thinking the only option is to lower the cabinet base to level with the toekick instead of on top of it. That will give us an extra 3/4 that we need. But that means no overhang on that cabinet. He isn't sure how that will look and wanted me to try and find a picture. If you can, could you see if your oven is sitting on top of the cabinet base that is level with the bottom of all the other cabinets or is sitting lower then the other cabinet bases? Thank you.

As you have discovered, there are great differences between both the actual vertical dimensions of various cooktops and ovens and -- just as importantly -- the clearances that specific models of cooktop require below, or that certain models of oven require above, the appliance. We have had an arrangement such as the one you desire, but not with the brands that you have been looking at, for almost 15 years now. From our (possibly obsolete) experience, the LG induction cooktop is the skinniest induction cooktop that you are likely to find. It is about the thickness of an Apple MacPookPro laptop of 2008 or so vintage. Part of its secret is that the exhaust for the air that the cooling fan blows over the electronics when the cooktop is in operation is at the rear of the cooktop above the surface (in the stainless trim). The exhaust slots are very skinny: about the thickness of a U.S. nickel, but they seem adequate to the task. Because the volume of the room is for all intents and purposes infinite for the purpose of accepting the cooling airflow, considerations of saturating the exhaust area as could happen for units that exhaust into the enclosed volume beneath the cooktop are moot. Among wall ovens, we found that the Bosch convection (not steam) ovens were a few inches shorter, top-to-bottom, than the other brands that we measured or checked the specs for. That would allow you to mount a Bosch lower (farther from the underside of the cooktop), but you then would be stooping lower to lift your Thanksgiving turkey out of the oven as your guests salivate. Because we had no problem with clearance below a cooktop, we used the compactness of the Bosch wall oven to mount it high, with a shallow drawer under the oven for hard to store items like cookie sheets and pizza stones.

Ok kitchen designer emailing me tonight for final choices! Where things stand: Miele CSO - plumbed Bosch Benchmark 36 in French door Sharp micro drawer: The contenders - as in OP, I have to have induction over oven of same brand: Wolf 36 induction + Wolf E: Favorite induction controls, prefer large hob on the right, but the chipping issue, and oven is $$ Bosch 36 Flexinduction + Benchmark Oven: center large hob and controls less appealing, but seems to have best balance of good product for induction and wall oven for its price point. Cooktop design works well over oven. Could get side opening door. Miele 36 induction + Miele Pure Line Oven: Like Miele layout of induction cooktop, less a fan of its controls, oven is relatively basic and no probe. But would match CSO. I’m likely going with Bosch but would love any last minute input/votes! Thanks for all the help so far.

We were hoping to do this in our new build with Bosch or Thermador units. Our cabinet guy said he could build a cabinet to make it work, but our appliance rep (and primarily his brand reps) said they wouldn’t stand behind the install in this configuration. We decided to split the two undercounter ovens, with a stack of cabinets directly under the cooktop and the two ovens to either side. I know it’s not ideal and would get torn apart by the kitchen gurus here, but it is what works best for us in this situation. We use two ovens a lot, I don’t particularly care for using the top oven in a stack (I’m short and don’t like lifting/lowering things at head level), and our options for stacking ovens this kitchen seemed to really close it in and limit countertop space. So this is what worked best for us.
