White/light countertop and black induction cooktop

I'm posting this separately from my other question about luce di luna guartzite because I guess it applies to any black/white combination. We need to decide now on the countertop for our cooking area and will be getting a Miele induction cooktop. The picture in the brochure looks like the cooktop has a stainless frame.

I'd like opinions on whether this black cooktop will look odd on such a light countertop. Will I be better off getting a dark granite for this area just in terms of aesthetics? If anyone has experience with luce di luna and staining/not staining under hard use I'd also welcome info on that.

I'm installing the same cooktop. I think it would look great on a light/white countertop. I'm doing marble everywhere in my kitchen except around the cooktop where I'm putting in stainless steel.

I have the light counter and black induction cooktop, mine is framless ,I do not think that it is odd looking. could have gotten a cooktop that is grayis in color but was a fraid that it would not age well.
I can take another better photo of the counter if you like.

vwhippiechick - Thanks. I remember it being a paint that I can't get here, but it reminds me of BM Woodstock Tan which I used in an entryway. It's brown, but I see green at times so it sounds similar to yours. blue67 - Have you looked at the Finished Kitchen Blog for ideas? You can do a search for kitchens with white cabinets. Sure, a soft gray, like pebble, would look fine with the cooktop, and would be less stark and edgy than a pure white. You'd just have to choose very carefully to make it work with the floor and cabinets. Both the cherry and the cork are very warm colors. That is, they have a lot of red undertones. Both Pebble and Rosemary look like they trend that way, but I'm not familiar enough with them IRL to say for sure. Most grays tend to be on the blue side, which could look really good and contrasty, but it could also look mismatched and sad if it were the wrong shade. The other problem here is contrast. Natural cherry is supposed to darken over time. There's a good texture contrast with the eco-cork, so they won't totally run together, but I don't think another medium tone is going to look good. The major surfaces in a kitchen are floors and counters (horizontal), cabinets and walls (vertical), plus interruptions of appliances, sinks and other fixtures. People have a tendency to prefer medium toned colors if asked to just choose one. If most of your major surfaces have them, however, and the hue changes are subtle (which they are in the slew of neutrals that includes gray counters), then it all starts to look very blah, and muddy (muddy being what happens at the end of the fingerpainting when you can't tell the blue, yellow and red apart anymore). The white whites and raven are at the extreme points on the contrast scale, and you'll get the best contrast with the white. In fact, that's where we started with the induction contrasting with the counters. Especially in a small room, white is a better option than dark. It reflects more light and makes the room look more open and airy than closed and dim. Maybe your best bet would be to get one of the whites for the counter and the Electrolux white induction cooktop? I worry about that some because matching whites is hard, and if you get a lot of direct sun (UV) on your counters, they will probably yellow somewhat over many years (it's the resin binder that does that). Viking has a white one with a stainless frame. It's kind of weird looking. The stainless would separate the two whites and make any color difference less noticeable. One reason the mottled colors soften the look is that they bring non-linear shapes (spots) into the mix. Another reason is that the spots have varied colors making the whole surface less aggressively one thing. Hm... Just found a different chart, where Caesarstone lists colors in a group called "soft gray". I had thought that you meant that in general. I'm too tired to rewrite this. So, yes, Arctic Salt is dramatic and would work, and Cinder, if it's the right color IRL, should do what you want if you like the less spotty look. I think Haze is too warm, leading to the lack of contrast problem, but that's also something to check with real life samples, in sunlight if possible. Sorry for rambling. Yes, I have first hand experience doing this for a couple different clients. My advice would be not to flush mount it. Couple of reasons for this: -To flush mount, your fabricator will have to route the counter-top to the exact size of the Miele cooktop frame. For some fabricators, this is outside their abilities and can result in a rough cut and force you to buy another slab of quartz. -For the fabricators that can do this, depending upon his skill level, this will leave a 1/16-1/8" gap around all sides, perfect place for food and grease to get caught in, and getting it cleaned becomes very difficult indeed. -Another downside is that down the road, when Miele discontinues that cooktop (and this is inevitable), while they will certainly offer another cooktop of the same size, the actual frame and housing is highly unlikely to line up with your already routed counter-top, leading to difficult and expensive options should the cooktop need replacing. For these reasons, I find the risk of headaches far outweighs the aesthetic reward. The good news is that Miele's cooktops have some of the slimmest profiles on the market, such that even when installed normally, they look quite sleek indeed. I had a kenmore white smooth top range for 3 years. It was wonderful. So easy to clean. I used all kinds of pans on it including cast iron. Never a single scratch or issue. When I moved out it looked as perfect as the day I moved in. I honestly didn't understand why people hated smooth top stoves. We bought a house that came with a coil stove. I've never hated anything more in my life, so difficult to clean. So I finally upgraded to a smooth top range. I could only find black tops. Even the white ranges have black tops. I can see why everyone hates them now. Used it once. ONCE. Already bubbles that I guess I'm going to have to use a razor to get out. I never dreamed of using a razor on my white one. And I could use a rough sponge. Not this one. Everything I do I'm going to be afraid of ruining it. Ugh. Next time I'm definitely spending a little more money and converting to a gas range. I would think modern technology would have this issue fixed.

I say, go with the granite that you love. Lighter granites often have to be resined to make them less prone to staining.

I think the black cooktop on a light granite looks great. It's no different than having a black gas cooktop on a light granite or light marble. Here's ours, you can be the judge:

It'll look fine. Your oven face will probably also appear black so it won't be the only dark patch.

But if you want it to disappear of course, try to match the counter to the cooktop.

Thank you everyone. We are taking the plunge and getting the luce di luna quartz on the island with the Miele induction cooktop in black. Our island cabinets are a very dark stained cherry and our permimeter will be white with a dark green granite countertop.

All of your kitchens are so beautiful and so different. Ice, your contemporary look is great. Although it's not the traditional one that I'm doing it all fits together and I'm trying to have faith that my vision of a traditional kitchen will look as pulled together as your contemporary one. Redroze, I can't believe your lanterns---they are almost exactly what I have picked for my kitchen---two and not three as everyone recommends. The two just seemed right in my space. lsandler, your kitchen is so cozy looking even though the space looks big and I like the way the cooktop looks on your granite.

All of the advice has been encouraging and now I'll just hold my breath until it's all put together. Pictures someday but I'm afraid all the subs will be on party time until January.

I believe DIVA makes a white induction 36". I have the DIVA in black and am extremely happy

There was another member I've not seen recently, and of course right now I've forgotten her user id! But I remember she was thinking of the white Diva cooktop in her white countertop, and she came to the decision that she'd rather have the black cooktop because that way, if (most likely when) the cooktop got grungy and grotty a black cooktop in a sea of white countertop wouldn't stand out as "I'm Dirty!" the way the white-on-white would.

Does that make sense? I know you've already made your decision, but I'm the type who loves validation!

Not only do I love validation---and that's a great point about white showing the dirt---I second guess until the last available second and sometimes even longer. The stone decision has been made but the appliances probably won't get ordered until after Thanksgiving and that's plenty of time to drive myself nuts. My best friend is the exact opposite. She looks until she finds something she likes, claps her hands and says, "that's it." She never gives it another thought and loves everything in her house and so do I. Either she has a great gift of design or temperment, probably both, and I wish I had it too but I don't.
