color scheme advice?

I love wood and stone look, but the advice is wood can make your home look too dark. I am at a loss what to do for a kitchen. I'd like a good color flow. We are already stuck with some dark. We got used cabinets for free that I painted dark brown because it seemed the only color that would look good on them. We then put in matching dark wood flooring and the wood ceiling beams are dark with contrasting light wood ceiling. We are still working on this house we are building. Any ideas? One idea of keeping it from being too dark is contrasting white countertops and a light stone backsplash of some sort or we could add more lightning and under cabinet light fixtures. Very new to this! I'll add some pictures of an example of wood and stone "looks" that make me melt with happiness to look at, but let me know if it seems to dark. I like light wood too but we already are stuck with some of the dark wood.

Hi again, Today I happened upon a slab of brushed absolute black at the granite place. It was gray, instead of the usual black. I have a honed sample that is also black. But I guess with "brushed" it comes out gray. I like it a lot. It looks like concrete (which I priced and was too much in my area). But then my excitement faded when the granite guy told me that it would have to be sealed to prevent oil from staining it. And it would look black when sealed! Do any of you have brushed AB? Is there someway to keep the gray look and protect it from oil stains? I love to fry, and it will be around the cooktop . . . Limommy - the Neolith place did not have a calacatta sample, or have it there to look at. I too wonder if it would feel like stone or not.

In somewhat prioritized order: Knobs: Replacing the cabinet knobs is one of the lowest cost ways to change the look of a kitchen. Maybe an oil rubbed bronze? Backsplash: Replacing the red/pink appearing back splash with new tile would be your biggest benefit. I think cream would go with cabinets/counters but you can try to match to a lighter color that's already in the counter. You can mix it up a little with tile that's a different size than 3x6 . I would recommend against introducing new colors that aren't already present in the counter. Improved storage: Is that a pantry next to the fridge? Could you put in some different shelving to help you store some of the items on the counter easier? Lighting: Some people hate overhead can lights, but if this was my kitchen I'd want to add some LED remodel can lights over the walkways. To me it seems like this would be a dark kitchen to work in after sunset. You could also put in new pendants that have a little more height (maybe 12"-15" high). It looks like you have a 9 foot ceiling so your light fixtures can be a little taller (but not much wider). Also if you do the backsplash I'd add under cabinet LED lighting (doesn't look like you have under cabinet lights right now). Cabinets: You could paint the cabinets an off white if the gold/yellow tint is really bugging you. I can't tell if the current cabinets are oak or maple. Redesigning the kitchen with new cabinets and counters will end up 2-3x more expensive. I would not go there unless you have the money and want to spend it to get all drawers, full height upper cabinets, an extra sink, and move appliances around. A lot of the above can be do it yourself. Replacing knobs just takes a screw driver. Even if you hire someone I'd think budget could be well under $10K including new stainless appliances (more if you have cabinets professionally painted).

The wood cabinets look pretty substantial in the photos --- I am guessing either custom made locally or from a pretty high end cabinetry shop, based on the depth of the raised panels. Lucky for you! I love wood cabinets that have a little bit of a rustic look, and think that works really well with a blue and white kitchen color scheme. There is a certain shade of blue I call cobalt that has been a traditional kitchen color forever, and it's easy to find all kinds of accessories in that color family. Could be posters that make you happy! If I lived there and realized that the border is the thing that bothered me THE MOST, in the short term I would probably just cover it up! I'd paint some big sheets of construction paper with the color that's on the walls (you can use the cheap kids' tempera paints for this, just mix til you get close to the shade) and then cut the sheets to the right size so I could tape them over the offending border. What a relief! Then you can live without that "distraction" while you work on plans for your ultimate changes once you own, since as others have said, removing layers of wall paper is a major pain. I honestly think that with enough blue and white you might be OK with the green, if you lie blue that is. And agree that better lighting can really brighten things up in an old kitchen. FINALLY the subject of green in a kitchen reminded me that the cabinets in Julia Child's kitchen (now in the Smithsonian!) were green. Her husband made them for her -- they are a lighter shade than your walls. But I did find this intriguing photo of a kitchen she used in Southern France, with dark wood cabinetry and yet another strategy for covering kitchen walls -- pegboard to keep tools handy!

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I do like the idea of going with a softer trim color such as Linen. Would the house benefit most from a light trim or a dark trim? Any thoughts on using SW Urbane Bronze for trim and/or front door.

Hi Tera, 1) You should edit your post to include the decorating forums. 2) Please inlcude a blue print or layout of your kitchen and attached areas where it can be seen from...how to tie it in is critical. Note: The folks on KT(kitchen Table) are buddies, friends....not necessarily decorators/Pros by trade...those people don't frequent this board often & may not pick up on your post. Oh...and deck photos....they don't help with kitchen design.....do you have any "dream" kitchen photos you like?

Do you like these kitchens for instance?

I am having difficulty finding kitchens that I love but some with a color scheme that I like. I'll see if I can find them to upload and draw a kitchen layout. I don't have any full pictures of the kitchen area since it was in frame stage.

There's a kitchen forum...a decorating discussions forum, a decorating only forum...and so on....when you edit your post it will ask "what forums you want to post it to"....then enter in the search "kitchens" for instance...you can list at least 3 forums...https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/kitchbath

Green looks good with brown and fits with the color scheme of your deck. I would recommend painting the cabinets (if that is an option) a pale sage green.

These kitchens I like, the color scheme might be something we could do but may still be too dark since our floors are dark.

Growing up in a house much to small to entertain guests comfortably, I found I'm obsessed with design that allows comfortable guest accomodations. I like the idea of having a good sized kitchen bar for people to sit at

I love dark colors too, dark brown, chestnut, black, charcoal gray, forest green. But try doing a kitchen or house with those colors, it ends up much too dark 😥

I would paint the cabinets in a heartbeat! Lars thanks for the link. Really like dark forest green and hunter green. Tera would you consider one of those colors?

I love dark colors also, especially black. I have black cabinets and a black wall in my kitchen. I think green would look great in your space. I would try emerald green. Also black, navy, or eggplant purple could also be options. One of your insp photos has black cabinets and dark floors.
