Counter-top Advice for old outdated farm kitchen
Comments (4)You need to do some homework. Every material has it's pros and cons, and it all comes down to what you are willing to live with. "Best" is completely subjective. Frankly, if my DH had not felt so strongly about our using a "higher end" counter top (we ended up with engineered quartz) I would have done a laminate. They are durable, warm, soft, and very inexpensive. Completely low-maintenance if you are not careless about using them. Our quartz will be fine, and looks fantastic, but we spent nearly three times what we could have spent on a high-end laminate. IKEA has some DIY laminate for incredibly little cost if you are willing to put in the effort and will buy you plenty of time to do some research on your countertop options. Comments (17)Does anyone know the answer to this - I have a 2 1/2" mitered flat edge and shaker overlay doors. When the doors were installed I noticed that I only have a 1/8" overlay over the door and drawer fronts. The counter does not protect the doors at all. Now the fabricator tells me that with a mitered edge they can only make a 1" overlay and not the 1 1/2 overlay that is standard with a flat eased edge. They said that when using a mitered edge only an inset door and drawer will do so that you can get enough overhang. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Any suggestions in how to correct this problem? How to add on to a granite edge. I can't rip out the countertop. Could possibly plane down the doors and drawers or make new inset doors and drawers but this is problematic to do....See Morecounter top advice
Comments (8)well, what do you have chosen for the perimeter? I think you can actually use pattern/movement in some counter area whether perimeter or island....not necessarily both. What will happen if you go very plain/pale is you don't get a counterpoint with ceiling. You want that kind of jockey of the eye between ceiling and counter, otherwise the ceiling dominates. I would take a granite with movement for island, maybe honed, if the perimeter is a plain selection.Don't rule out soapstone for the island.....yes...seriously....See Moreadvice on laminate counter tops
Comments (7)Oh sorry, I didn't mean it moves. It has pattern. It mimics stone and has a longer repeat run than the average Formica. Of course it is more expensive than the average Formica. I think River Gold or Sea Pearl would look nice with your cabinets. You can order samples off of their web site. I have Dolce Vita and really like it. I heard WilsonArt makes nice laminate counters also...See MoreRelated Professionals
