First Home - Struggling With Oddly Shaped Living Room
Hello all, we're so excited for our first home but also completely unable to brainstorm any other way to make this living room work with a couch and TV set up, given the door and fireplace location. [this is not our furniture, we haven't moved in yet]
We'd love to avoid having a TV (75") over the the mantle.
Even with a mantle mount to lower the TV when in use, the whole area will look so weird when lowered, and it would block the cute fireplace set up.
It seems weird to have the couch back to the fireplace, and it also seems weird and awkward to try to fit a 75" TV under the breakfast bar opening...
Any thoughts are so much appreciated.

Comments (7)We have a Gambrel Colonial (similar to Dutch but more often found here in New England.) Our living room dimensions are similar to yours. What I have done is to cluster a sitting area around the fireplace. At one end of the room is a piano, and the other end has a drop leaf desk. Yes to the beams! We have them in our home in both the family room and in the living room. I can see some nicely boxed in beams to match the wood in your living room. Have fun decorating! I agree with getting rid of that wallpaper and there's just too much "stuff". Will you be painting any of the woodwork white? You would need to leave that much room between the chairs (or sofa) to the windows. That's why I said to ignore it. You and others wouldn't even see it with the doors closed and the furniture layout as shown. It would look natural. I'm sure other posters and also pros will stop in with their solutions. Comments (4)The stove is gas and we've never used it. I would love to tear out all the brickwork but the original chimney is walled off behind it so it would be a huge, expensive project if it's even structurally feasible. This house has a lot of projects and the main level is my priority so the wet bar will have to wait even though it would be great to have that done. Maybe I can find a slide to attach to the wet bar...they climb on it anyway...and then put the climber on the back deck if it will fit. My boys play outside a ton when we have snow, but 2/3 of the winter we have no snow and apparently it's not so much fun to play outside when it's cold, windy, and dry. We did have the room open for a playroom when we first moved in but then DH insisted on getting that sectional. I would have preferred just a couch and more open space. Comments (5)So as not to have furniture in entry path, I would do a well sized L sectional in this placement. Or a sofa + chair - and a swivel chair could be a good option for this arrangenent. Sofa placed where red marking is, chair placed approximately where purple marking is. With tv mounted, or placed on stand, on wall to left of fireplace. And I see there is an outlet right there. If there is little room for a tv console, a stand like this could also be used. Plus, a mobile tv stand like this can be helpful - to adjust for tv viewing distances. From your one photo, it is hard to get a sense of the available space for a tv in that spot there. But that is where I would place the tv. If you have a dining room, another option could possibly be switching living room and dining room. So the dining room would be in front room by the fireplace. If you are able to have a flexible dining room setup, you could use a round table and folding chairs, and when not having guests over for dinner, could set front room up as entry foyer. If you needed the space to be set up as dining room all the time, that works, also. But would need pics of dining room and/or any other rooms that might possibly work - in order to determine the feasibility of making a switch....See More

last monthI would block the straight stair with plants and force entry on the angle so that the path to the door is a straight shot.
There's only one wall to accommodate a 75" TV. That's not something you can place over the FP unless the fireplace is at least as wide.

A couple living rooms with couch back to entry.. If you have a sectional, then turn it so one side faces TV wall and other faces fireplace and windows--very important so you enjoy windows and fireplace.

Or, if you don't have a sectional, then put TV on that far wall and two armchairs facing windows and fireplace as below. Do not get a loveseat--two comfy armchairs are much more functional.

last monthlast modified: last monthCheck out Etsy for custom designed back-of-the-sofa tables--wide but narrow; live edge; with a bottom shelf. Just do a search on Etsy site for "narrow sofa table wood." There are many examples for under $300.
A couple tweaks with your smallish living room footprint:
--Lose the fake plants, hassock next to chair, all the cluttery things under the counter opening. None of that stuff should be there. It should be a clear pathway into the room, not a way station for extra "stuff."
--Replace TV over fireplace with new art work. Put the existing art work on the wall with the TV when you move it. You can create a wide piece that fits that entire wall to balance out that huge screen. Your modern art work will help take the focus off the black screen.
Miami House · More InfoIf your sectional gets turned, and it works, use the cabinet as an end table on the short side. It looks kind of lost and bulky where it is.
--Let your curtains hang straight and get a plain rod that goes all the way across the wall from the corner right up to the fireplace. Keep drapes to side for maximum light coming in.
--In good weather, grow some plants in colorful pots to look at right outside your glass doors. (Maybe stick you fake plants out there for now.) People often forget to create a nice view to look at through sliding glass doors. It's a way to extend the size of the living room so inside and outside are connected. This costs you very little.- PRO
