How do I make my porch four seasons?

Hi Everyone, I'm likely going to replace my siding and roof and would love to make any progress towards making my old house's front porch a 4 season room. Should I have them add insulation before putting on the new siding? If so, what kind of insulation? Also, what else should I be considering to make this porch 4 seasons? What would you suggest?

Hi. Since no one else has replied yet I'll offer my 2 cents from my experience with my old house. I would call a few companies that do insulation, have them come out and give you a quote on their recommendation. Ask a lot of questions. Find out order of operations. And if they make you feel at all stupid, don't work with them. A question: is there an air duct for heating/ cooling? If not you may need a mini split or similar. Thats pricey but obviously necessary. And again get the order of operations right so you don't waste money. Good luck!

Me again. Can't find a way to edit my previous comment. We did this exact thing with a back porch. Windows look older - we replaced ours, made a world of difference. This is not a straightforward thing and if you ask a roofer all you'll get is information on roofing. You need a general contractor who can understand the job comprehensivly and help you create a plan.

Yes. I've been growing vegetables year 'round here for the last 10 years or so. "Non-tropical" vegetables can take light frosts. There is a large list of them. Almost all root vegetables, however these must be started off in warm soil. I sow them in early September. Cole Crops - brassicas of all kinds, many Asian vegetables -pretty much anything related to cabbage or mustard. Cauliflower is a pain here. swiss chard, and many lettuces and other greens withstand frosts. I just planted lettuces today at church from transplant. I am no longer planting anything from seed. Seeds need about 70 degrees, in general to germinate. Tenting them can help. Row covers work unless it is freezing rain. I use old sheets for row covers in my raised beds, and I usually use plastic on days like today, to heat up the soil a bit and get better growth. I never ever let the plastic touch the vegetables because that burns them when it freezes. I keep frozen wet out of the vegetables, that kills most back to the ground and they don't aways recover. I protect spinach and lettuces. There are a variety of ways to do that. I protect only when there is going to be a hard frost, artichokes, and celery. I use old tree pots for this, or heavy cardboard boxes (not in rain) with a rock or brick on them. You can use heat sinks if we get a 2 week freezing period like we sometimes do. I like bricks the best for this. I just plop them inside the tented veggies. I make tent frames out of PVC and use them every year. My favorite covers for the garden are old shower curtain liners. Heavy plastic! You can also build units around existing beds using bales and plastic held with bricks . I have done this. The most important thing when tenting or protecting is getting in the light and ventilation. You can't let the heat build up for any length of time (under a tent it can easily get 20 degrees warmer than outside, if it's sunny)...so you have to be present to tend the vegetables. GGG

Thanks for the smart points about rain, klem. And I agree -- there are just so many options, and people are so opinionated about those options, that it's hard to know what to do. My biggest concern remains the weather and how that will affect things, but I know that's a local issue. Maybe I should walk around the neighborhood and survey some people with porches about the sun and the temp, etc. Without adding any new information, my wife and I are divided on what to do -- she thinks just screening it is fine, but I think it would be really nice to have glass for the late fall / winter. If we had to decide today, I think we would either do simple / cheap modern storm windows (which could be opened to the screen on the bottom half during the summer) or do something a bit more adventurous. What I'm thinking on the adventurous front is to screen it in, but do it in a way where there's space to add the old-style wooden storm windows later -- just simple single-pane units that slide into the windo frames and attach with this: http://www.houseofantiquehardware.com/screen-hooks-storm-sash-window-hanger?sc=12&category=91 . The main thing would be attaching the screen on the inside of the frames, or at least creating an outside sill deep enough for the storm windows to nestle within it and still be flush on the outside. Then we could remove the storm windows and store them in the garage during the summer (though that wouldn't help with rainstorms you mention). Does that make any sense? If we did that, we could see how we like the screen in the spring and summer, but add the glass later in an affordable and removable fashion. I haven't seen many people try this, but I think we could build the storm frames and get the glass cut by a local shop. ptreckel - that's a great question. I'm not sure I know though :) I kind of want it to be both, if that's possible. I do want it to be a porch. But want to make sure it's cozy and comfortable as well, like a "room" in our home. I'm worried that slate flooring would feel cold. I originally thought of doing a grey washed oak floor with white walls, and a dark ceiling. I also liked the idea of a pretty blue ceiling like the ocean. I'm leaning towards neutrals (grays, whites, darker ceiling) and then doing fun things with couches, pillows, etc.

There are many factors to consider.... How cold are your winters? Does the porch have any source of heat or ability to add it? Is it sitting over a basement or crawlspace?

Fiberglass insulation would be the least expensive, just make sure it fills your wall cavity. R13 or R15 for 2x4, R19 or R21 for 2x6. Since you have so much window area and you don't mention insulating the ceiling keep your expectations modest, it will help you towards your goal.

How much four season do you need? What will it be used for? Also, how much heating would it need in winter? Would you want any summer cooling or would windows open be enough?

I use my enclosed porch year round. I don't heat or cool it. It has great south face so gets solar a lot. It does get around freezing in the winter, but it stays several degrees warmer than outside and I can overwinter plants out there. Windows open in the summer. It has ceiling fans, I don't like to use them they are old and meh. It gets pretty darn hot during the dog days. We don't hang out/living space out there much. It's mostly a utility/gardening sort of thing.
