Design Dilemma Organizing the Home hallway

Small narrow hall 1940s colonial - advice needed

This long narrow hallway needs to act as a mud room area for everyone’s things (schoolbags, coats, shoes) Any ideas on how the make it work while keeping it neat coming in front door. The very tiny closet at the end of the hallway is not cutting it. 16ft x 2.5ft from front door to closet

What is under the stairway wall? Is there space there that can be utilized? And what is behind the adjacent wall on the right? Can the closet be expanded in any direction?

Please show photos of the entrance door area and the area to the right of the current photo. A hallway 2.5 feet wide is not wide enough to store a pair of shoes or a backpack, so looking at adjacent space would be useful.

I'm going to point out a couple of considerations about that layout. They are just in case you haven't thought about it. I'm sure you have as its just about the layout you have now. a. Using the cooktop will sometimes involve asking the person at the sink to move. (Anytime those drawers under the cooktop are opened). b. Using cabinet one will sometimes involve asking the person at the cooktop to move. c. Its going to be harder to get into the corner uppers with a modern hood that sticks out further - perhaps even more than today because the corner upper cabinets look like they might be smaller. d. Be careful about leaving allowance for fillers in the corners and up against a wall - particularly when using frameless cabinets. In a corner, the filler on both sides needs to be the depth of the door AND the depth of the handle plus a tiny bit - so that the cabinets on both sides can open properly. Up against a wall, you should allow for a 3/4" piece of starter molding - except that you may need more to clear your door casing. e. Be careful about wall cabinets with wide doors that open over counters and the amount that the hinge allows the door to open. Looking at the wall cabinet door arrangement over the dishwasher - it looks like you've skipped the first cabinet and put dishes into the second cabinet. You may want to rethink that. You could get brained by the cabinet door or left in the slightly odd situation where the door doesn't open wide enough to be able to pick something out of the dishwasher and put it away without first putting it on the counter to avoid crashing it into the counter. Or you have to walk around the open dw door to put stuff away. This is just my personal opinion, but I would move the dw back over to the left and put the main dish storage on the first cabinet to the right. f. Same wall cabinets - opening the center cabinet prevents both other cabinet doors from opening - certainly not the end of the world or anything.

Hi Tara -- lots of great advice upthread about how to transform the feel of the rooms while doing very little to change the architecture (also on team remove shutters here...and preferably put nothing up...I've only ever seen accent windows like that left bare but...). April's nailed it re the before/after shots (perhaps a wide-angle lens, too?). You aren't that far away from your own after in that space, though it may not feel that way. Whether you end up with paler or deeper wall shades the key is complementing the wood, so Google This Old House tips for cleaning it so you're working from the best starting point. As someone who's lived in vintage fixers and been involved with fixers I also just wanted to offer encouragement. There's a real mental health toll to living in disarray with no end date, spending spare time fixing, not having enough budget to fix or decorate immediately, perhaps navigating different priorities for what gets fixed when, etc. If any of those apply it's draining...not sure of your story, but if they all apply it can cause even more issues. If you have space to call one room or closet or whatever the crap room, do it and clear as much as possible out of these rooms. If you can DIY the scrubbing and painting do that asap...i think you'll feel a real lift when you walk through the door. If you need to furnish on a tight budget, post separately for ideas you may not have thought of. While I love love love older homes they can carry so many styles of design -- see examples others' posted plus homes of Europeans, who laugh at our idea of "old." I Rx zero heavier dark wood pieces since you're already struggling...hopefully your husband will be on board!

Your home is gorgeous! I spent a year renovating a 1939 petite colonial (1700 sf). In my case, I had to add a kitchen as the old one was tiny had badly renovated in the 1990s. A few workflow tips in your newer post with the kitchen. I'd put the prep sink at the range end of your island, instead of at the dining room entrance end. Think about it -- you chop, then have to carry the food to the range. Please rethink that desk in your kitchen. I've had "work/message centers" as built-ins in previous homes, but here in my new old house, I'm using a piece of furniture -- a drop-front secretary where I can close up the mess when guests arrive, but sit there and work (printer in the bottom). You can put the secretary in any room. Where your desk is located, it's not a drop station for bringing in the mail, schoolbooks, etc. For aesthetics, please try to make the kitchen fit the spirit of the house. White cabinets would likely fit it better than stained wood. Consider having at least a few glass-front upper cabinets. If you turned that desk space into storage, you wouldn't need to line the walls with upper cabinets. It's amazing what you can fit into a "hutch" look that would fit the aesthetics of your home. I had hutches flanking my farmsink in my previous home. One for pantry items, the other for dishes. My current 1939 home new renovation -- hutches -- the one of the left of my paneled fridge is for dishes and the one one the right side is filled with food items stored in canisters and containers. My kitchen is only 12x12 as the dimensions are in keeping with the original room sizes. The dining room is 12x12 and the living room is 12 x 21.

Thank you! I hated to have to get rid of any of the original elements of the house, and tried to salvage what we could. The cabinet hinges and hardware were not original though and were probably added sometime in the early 70s when the house was moved to its present location. The wood ceiling did not extend to the breakfast nook and unfortunately when we removed the wall between the nook and kitchen, we found that the ceilings did not line up properly and had to do some work to correct that. There have been a lot of changes to the house that predated us. When we took down the walls in the breakfast nook we found that there originally had been 5 windows- at some point previous owners decided to board them up and drywall over the top!

It’s a very large wall where the couch to living room sits on other side of it. I believe it it load bearing so can’t take it out. There is nothing on the stairway wall..it leads to finished basement

I this the only entry for family? I do not see how under the stairs storage would be a good plan since then it will block the hallway totally.There must be a back door so what is that not utilized I gues I need more info . Post here in comments along with answers to the other questions or comments . DO NOT start another post

My DSIL had a similar house with no coat closet at all. They hung their coats and stuff in the basement stairs. As in, open the basement door and hang your coats on the hooks. For shoes, they had a tray just inside the front door. (I never did understand how the developer could build a house in Ontario Canada without a coat closet and no door from the attached garage into the house.)

Your house might not have a back door that is viable as a family entry, like DSIL’s back door that was just a patio slider in the fenced back yard, so not a good candidate.

I have lived in myriad old homes with front door only entrance, super narrow hallway, and no closet at all. I'm a fan of everything in its place and not tossed around. (At least in my mind.) Various options:

Maximize hooks on the inside of basement door and closet door for purses, bags, backpacks, or frequently used coats.

Hooks on stairway wall to basement near the top step. Yep they crowd out the stairwell and yep you have to lean in to get them. Not ideal for kids but it works for adults.

Maximize the hell out of your tiny closet. Can you show us a pic of the inside of it? In a ridiculously shallow small dining room closet I hung 2 telescoping rods that faced the door (instead of a sideways rod). I fit tons of coats side by side in there and they were very easy to access.

Pretty dresser in the living room near front door - buffet could work. Put in the drawers shoes, bags, books, top drawer was for keys, dog leash, and other collected junk.

Be sure to switch out coats seasonally and store off season elsewhere. Same with any other infrequently used items.

This looks like my hallway! Can we see inside the closet? I just redid my closet TWICE first time was still not cutting it for us. We pretty much cleared all shelving and added hooks around the walls inside and then added a shoe holder (tried two, then found a winner) to the inside and so far so good

I'd also suggest under the stairs, if it is empty space. If you put in bins and shelves, you can really maximize the useful space. That said, schoolbags can go in the kids' rooms. They should be bringing home homework in their bags.

The hallway closet has shelves is it about 7 1/2 inches in width. It used to hold pantry items before we redid kitchen so that is not needed anymore. It’s extremely tiny

I have a narrow closet and put hooks on back wall and door for hanging coats. agree hallway really too narrow for storage. backpacks in bedrooms. most people i know end up with hooks and shoe bench in livingroom. i bought a nice wood shoe bench on etsy and it really helps hide the shoes nicely!

I don't understand your comment - what is 7 1/2 inches in width? Could you enlarge the closet to use the space I marked in pink?

All hooks inside your closet on two levels. Maybe you can only get one on each side wall and three across the back given your size. You can be lazy and do it all with command hooks.

Elfa inside door rack - you can add baskets for smaller bags, bins for hat and gloves, hooks. I have three of these inside various doors in my apartment. The screw into the wood at the top and bottom of the interior side of the door and are not visible at all from the outside. Total game changer.
