kitchen window design advice desperately needed

I really need help deciding on a window. As you can see from the attached photos I am doing a complete kitchen remodel. I have a round top window above my sink and I’m going to be putting a window above my induction stove top which will go where the current subzero refrigerator is. I don’t know whether to make it a window with a transom to match the breakfast area that has three windows with transoms or whether to go with another round top or whether to take out the round top and put in all rectangular transom windows. Also if I keep the one round top over the sink (Which I’m leaning towards), that is closer to the ceiling than the top of the flat breakfast area transom windows so if I go with a transom window above the new cooktop I don’t know whether to make it the same distance from the ceiling as the existing transom windows or to go higher to match the round top. I know this sounds confusing but hopefully the pictures will help and I guarantee you can’t be more confused than me. Thanks to anyone who responds!

You need a hood even with induction so no window where you are planning one The induction goes where you have your cooktop now with proper venting. I am confused as to the wall where you lan the window that is also an outside wall?IMO the round top window is the kitchen looks like some one always wanted a round topped window and threw one in

I would take into consideration what the windows look like on the exterior of the home.

" I agree with rosie - make the DR what YOU want it to be - informal if that's what you need! If you put a rectangular table in front of those kitchen windows tho, I think you'd have enough room for the 4 of you. measure it out. 2 in the back and 1 on each end. if that end of the counter is slimmed down you'd probably have plenty of room between it and the table to walk thru easily (where the stools are now). I hadn't thought a lot about the front of the counter - just that it seemed bland. maybe w/o the white trim and white counter top it wouldn't look that way? I wondered about that cab to the left of the fridge. mw's are smaller today. Those OTR mws are larger. I just had reason to measure my mw and it's 10" H x 20" L and 15" D. I think it'd look better there and a nice hood over the stove would perk things up. Check those measurements w/your mw cab - it could probably be trimmed out nicely to hold a smaller one. They aren't usually that tall. They aren't very expensive now either. I think I paid about 50.00 for mine 5 or so yrs ago. I don't care for banquettes - had something like that while raising my kids and wouldn't do it again. Someone is always stuck back there. The someone who ends up needing out of there the most often. It's a pain for others to move to let them out... and back in. and to move the table to give them room. moving the stove is a pretty good idea - except it'd then be in the walk thru area. Where it is now other people can come in the kit and get a drink, go to the fridge w/o being in the cook's way. your floor looks great! I'd spend the money on new counter top, moving the mw and a prep sink, and changing the table. Can you put that table into the DR for a game table for the kids? As for granite - well, I'm not a fan of it (tho there are many I just looove the looks of). It's hard - things dropped on it will break and glass will fly around and splinters of it will go everywhere. That's a choice you'll have to decide on. If going granite, I'd check yards for something that doesn't look like it's the cheapest tho. Those that are a bunch of speckles always look cheap to me (people have different views on that). I don't like a lot of spots anyway tho - lol! Really dark ones seem to show the dust a lot too. The granite yard might have something stuck back that someone never followed thru on or isn't the 'in' thing right now. If they do good seams they might have a partial slab or 2 that would fit your kitchen. Take a layout of your kitchen with you. I'd certainly fix the table situation as soon as possible so that you can all sit around the table to eat and chat. here's a version of an over the fridge display area - and I'd try to put in some slide outs in the cabs if possible - reusing the doors. possibly like this - or this - or this - these can be worked around you needs for what you have in the cabinets.

No helpful suggestions so far, just to say this big window is not easy at all...being wider than its height. I have a similar one..but it has some sort of separation in the middle(I'm sure there's a word for it but I don't remember it right now). Anyway, that separation at least creates two frames within one, and thus a possibility to do woven blinds(for example) or Roman shades..I'm exploring these possibilities right now. Here, I think curtains might be the way to go..depending on the window width..but you might want to introduce say, sheers-and then drapes too, so the drapes will be tied to the sides, with maybe third drape in the middle..so that you'll always have some privacy, and when even more is needed-you can pull the drapes too. I hope what I wrote makes sense:) As for the bay window-there was a thread here, with very interesting suggestions..I think from Annie..I wish she'd come, and some other posters too..they're really great with window treatments. I don't remember the name of that thread of course, or who was the OP, or even when it was.

If you're going to use knobs on a rounded surface, then I would get clear plastic washers to put between the front of the cabinet and the knob to help absorb that uneven space.

Hello Sheila Kelly Drafts , Not to add another voice to all the, 'help,' you got above, but let's see what we can do here. I'll let you in on a little trade secret to Kitchen Design - it's called, 'The Triangle.' The most efficient designs create a triangle between Sink, Stove/Oven & refrigerator, with use able counter space between. Currently you have an odd shaped polygon going on - and using the secondary sink actually cuts off the entryway to the pantry - which is what you wanted to keep in the first place. Coco Chanel said you should remove one clothing accessory before you leave the house. Same idea goes for your home - it's not about putting ALL things in, it's about putting the RIGHT things in. Specifically - do you really need (2) sinks in a kitchen this size - or would a traditional stove and a Pot Filler serve you better (for example?). It also looks like you have a dark corner with some shelves - maybe creating an 'L' Shape off the pantry would help more & give some of that freed up counter space to actually eat at the island. I take it by your screen name that you can Draft & create some 3d models. With that being said, I'll offer a free preliminary plan sketch of the kitchen for you to model for free. I will try to post more pictures now- I do not know why the others did not take. I checked with the building inspector and I do not need an exhaust fan. That seems to be a very common misunderstanding in the design industry but when you think about it the building inspector is correct. It is not a safety thing (who turns on a fan if there were a fire). It is just if you don’t like the odors (we love the odors of cooking including garlic and onion) or if you cook with a lot of grease and splatter or don’t clean up right away. Also I know most people build with the idea of resale but that is not our situation -we are building for ourselves not our heirs :) -but I really do appreciate your comments.

No more transom windows. They are their own thing that should only stay to the right of the door. No more round windows. The one you have now is fine, but two would look odd. Make a rectangular window like the one over the sink minus the semi-circle. Have the bottom in the same location as the sink window and the top the same height as the middle of the semi-circle on your sink window.

Is your range gas, electric, or induction? Not having a vent with a gas oven is a safety issue. Read about indoor air pollution and gas ranges.

Can you post more photos so we see the breakfast room and other windows?

Are there other arched windows near by that match/balance the kitchen window on that side of the home? As Lyn mentioned, how would removing that arched window effect the exterior?

I hate to comment on things you did not ask about, but I feel obligated to tell you that moving the cooktop to where the fridge currently is is a very bad idea. 😩

First, it puts your cooking zone in what looks like a major walkway from that entry door in the photo (love the bench btw!). Is that a back entry from the garage? Do you bring in groceries that way?

I won’t get into the toxic cooking fumes debate, but I can only imagine the cleaning of that window being a constant annoyance. I do love the look of two taller and more narrow windows flanking the sides of the stove hood though. I would suggest that instead.

However, I would NEVER EVER put the cooking zone in a major foot traffic isle. That is flat out asking for a hospital visit! The cooking zone should always be in the isle most protected from passerby’s.

Another bad idea is how the oven is too far from the cooktop with a barrier island in between that you must manuever around. Also the only landing is on the island right in front of someone seated at the bar. I hope that is not an undercounter oven on the island under one of your prep zones on the island. Your other prep zone would be to the right of the sink where you would have the DW underneath you. That is annoying because you cannot clean as you go. If someone needs a glass or something in the dw, you must stop what you are doing and move out of the way.

You are going from a perfectly functional design, to a disfunctional and potentially dangerous design. This just makes me sad. I honestly am shocked a kitchen designer did this design. Is it a certified KD you used or is this a cabinet salesperson in the cabinet department at a big box store who has no clue what they are doing?

It also will explain why we just cannot let it go when we hear that someone is planning a kitchen that we see major layout problems. So sorry!

If you are open to layout help, we need a little more info. It will open a can of worms, but it will be the best thing you can do!

You will definitely get some great ideas from the Pros and Non-pros alike who just know a lot about kitchens. I hope you will reconsider that kitchen design. I am serious, it is really that bad.

I’ve had the same experience and we installed our induction without a fan about two years ago and we’ve had no problem with anything but every Designer we talked to told us we need an exhaust fan. Can anyone tell me why that is the common advice? 1. Not safety 2. Cooking smells appealed to some people 3. Some cooks clean up in a timely manner… So why is this expensive device pushed on everyone?
