No helpful suggestions so far, just to say this big window is not easy at all...being wider than its height. I have a similar one..but it has some sort of separation in the middle(I'm sure there's a word for it but I don't remember it right now). Anyway, that separation at least creates two frames within one, and thus a possibility to do woven blinds(for example) or Roman shades..I'm exploring these possibilities right now.

Here, I think curtains might be the way to go..depending on the window width..but you might want to introduce say, sheers-and then drapes too, so the drapes will be tied to the sides, with maybe third drape in the middle..so that you'll always have some privacy, and when even more is needed-you can pull the drapes too. I hope what I wrote makes sense:)

As for the bay window-there was a thread here, with very interesting suggestions..I think from Annie..I wish she'd come, and some other posters too..they're really great with window treatments.

I don't think that blinds necessarily have to be casual depending on the type of material used. I just did a quick search and came up with some possibilities for ways to dress the windows.

With the leather sofa as an indicator, I don't see your room as terribly formal. Polished and sophisticated, but not formal. Hunter Douglas makes some beautiful cellular shades with fabrics that look like linen that could look nice. Then later, you could add panels at the side if you want a warmer look. Silhouettes or their knock-offs would look nice.

What about roman blinds in the bay and blinds with coordinating fabric on the windows.

Wide slat plantation shutters!! Very clean, and would add architectural interest.

You don't want shutters, you have no place for them to stack at the ends of your windows. I'd do Roman blinds. With custom fabric and/or a bit of trim, they can look formal.

With drapes, you need room on either side of the window for them to stack (ie the folded curtains cover some space. You have know in the bay window, meaning you'd have to close off the entire space with the curtains closed. With a cushion, it would be extra seating.

I like what Annette posted for the bay window - those and stationary panels on either side, natching the panels at the other window.

Or get the "pull up" shades for privacy at night.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We've owned the home one year (and this bring my first home) and I am completely "befuddled" when it comes to windows. I hate it. The room isn't White House formal but I was afraid by not doing curtains it would look medical office like and a tad sterile. Unfortunately due to my waffling , the rods are up and my painter /dry wall guy can't return for two months as he just started a new home project. In this tiny town you literally wait that long! I can't believe of all the things in life window treatments stress me the most- ridiculous. I'm embarrassed

Don't know if you're willing to change them at this point, but If they're the brackets for the rods in your pic, they need to be mounted up higher above and out further on the sides.
