You have a classic house. Your surround fits the style. It isn't "dated", it's classic.

This is exactly what I want!! I worry about the cost of that. I really want a cover over the front door.

To me the straight one complements the house the best, the pediment shaped one awkwardly cuts across the row lock. A fanlight pediment is traditional but the detailing on this one is clearly late 20th century.

The best update would be a portico to cover people coming to the front door. Get a quote for that first.

The current overdoor looks like one of the foam units that just attaches to the wall, maybe with a few fasteners and construction adhesive. I don't see any flashing. You can probably have that one removed and a new one of whatever style to replace, except that you should make sure to cover at least what's covered now, as there could be adhesive or the brick may have weathered differently. I'm assuming the flashing is at the bottom of the brick.

For protection, your entrance requires a canopy.

Note that if/when you remove your fan, there might be a “shadow” of where the original was placed. Unless the new one covers it completely, this might show. And…you have the brick row detail to take into account. Don’t obscure that unless you are building a portico that will incorporate it somehow.
