So many questions/unknowns. Dated is such a loaded term. Just because something is out of favor with the masses doesn't mean it's necessarily a negative.

Can you post some photos of the room? What is your style and the style of the home?

What is your goal in using a vinyl wallpaper?

What do the wallpapers look like and who makes them?

Thanks for responding so quickly. I think my style is traditional with clean lines. No real reason for choosing the vinyl, I just liked the color and design, but I feel it's out dated. We just got new french doors and they need to be painted to match my trim. That's when I thought maybe its time to change the whole look.

Sorry but your striped choice does seems dated to me.

I don't care for the stripe. It does look dated to me. Just put the solid both above and below the chair rail, or look for a grasscloth. Or just repaint. Look at the pictures on Houzz, selecting traditional for the style. There are hundreds of ideas you could consider. You haven't shown much of the room, so it's hard for me to give anymore specific advice. Here are some pictures with traditional furniture.

If you want to have chair rail? You do something like this, just easy and inexpensive shadow boxing alllll AS TRIM WHITE everywhere else

There are so many combos of what to do above and below the rail and it could look fine to do as you suggest with the right prints. However, this specific wallpaper is very 1980's and not too appealing.

Vinyl wallpapers are washable for kids and messy people. Your house looks tidy, and something less shiny and plastic-y, like the paper and grasscloth recommended above, will give you a really elegant dining room.

And you will find the huge trend in "grass cloth" to be not the hairy texture, but far more refined textures. Even linen......

So there : )! Click - it is a refined grass. Wider width as well at 51 inches vs 36.

That said? The shine on your selection, seems not right for your home and screams "contemporary". Not modern, not traditional..... just 1982 contemporary.

There are many....many ways to beautiful : ) that simply never date.

"Dated" is one of the stupidest terms in decorating. All it means is it was trendy at some point in the past. Does it look great? Is the question you should ask yourself. I'm not a big fan of that stripe, but if you like it, that's all that counts. Anything trendy is going to look dated well before you want to spend money on updates.

Trends are far longer lasting......

It in a category with wallpaper borders and little gathered valances. Both "trends" sailed , despite they linger in a vast number of homes and clearly are loved by some. But no denying....they read a bit grandma.

Not to be a too loud and proud dissenter, but — Fabulous! Fabulous!

This is your one room where you may gloss it up!

Tack or Goo the papers on a wall, ponder, then, big breath, Google enormous and very red (any bright color, I note the chairs and chose red, but any big and detailed set prints in a warm color. Love any coral red with silver) English or French botanical prints!

Stripes are a classic we inherit from Georgian (used until Regency) England. In silver? With color and a sideboard or long floating shelf? That is a CLEAN reinvention of the slightly dimmer, happily dirty lol at times, Georgian style. The English discarded it and, having a renaissance of their own atm, just now revive it. It remained an American tradition in finer homes in the dining room, especially on the Coasts.

The Jacobean papers shown above are lovely, and if you go that route, understandable, but? Those were originally designed to be kitchen prints or draperies, crewel work pillows, hanging bed draperies. They are in use now in dining rooms to make the atmosphere more relaxed. The chinoiserie would be a better fit perhaps for a formal dining room.

But formal dining rooms are a true wow, and rare these days — you have the right dining set for this! And there can be no prints, gallery style (i break with tradition a little, here) over eye-catching print. Dark dining rooms are not in keeping with American Georgian, as Colonials liked light or bright colors! Dark interiors were for taverns.

Please just go with what you love! Your first instinct was right. I am now inspired lol …. googling giant botanicals!

Should you choose with your original pick (fingers crossed!) one more suggestion, and crash helmet here! If you carry the mocha in all other rooms, or whatever color in in the kitchen? paint the molding (I know! Courage!) in same or similiar. Matting for your prints makes a stable rhythm for flow, and you can use asymmetry in a hanging light fixture to break up the static feel, if you like.
