Merge old garrison colonial house with new addition!?!
Comments (7)"Look like a carnival"; I'm going to use that. Traditionally double hung windows had counter-weights to have the sashes operate properly. Those counter-weights took up space beside each window in the wall. When modern double hung windows are mulled together without the space between them that would be required in a traditional double hung window, they give the house a more modern look. A subtle detail but it contributes to the look of a house. So for a more traditional look separate the original house second floor double hung windows by approximately eight inches, or a larger distance similar to the addition. For those changes and the others, I would recommend engaging a local architect versed in traditional residential architecture....See MoreExterior Facelift for Garrison Colonial
Comments (2)What you have planned will go a long way! I would definitely remove the shutters but then beef up your window trim size. I would also add a larger column to the front porch. I see you painted the garage side door to match the entry door. However, I would paint the side-door and garage to match the siding --You don't want to highlight these, but rather make them blend in. I also think larger beautiful exterior lights will add a lot to your home. I've also loved arbors over garage doors, which I think will add a nice architectural element to your home....See MorePlease help! Updating Exterior of our Garrison Colonial
Comments (2)I am in the same boat. We have a Garrison Colonial that needs an update. I think the best approach is a full front porch (also the most expensive options) but since we just added a screen porch to the back, I am looking for a less expensive options. I am considering adding a awning style portico held up with corbels to the front or perhaps a trellis above the windows to help disguise the overhang. I am also considering ditching the shutters around the door and adding some white panels to make the door look bigger, adding wider trim around the windows and eliminating the shutters altogether, changing the siding, and perhaps adding a panel or window box under the window. Below are a few ideas, I am considering perhaps they might work for you. I would love to see what you decide to do. Below are some of the ideas that might work for you. Not sure what you call this style portico, matches better with the roof line. Maybe a trellis above the windows to hide overhang...See MoreGarrison Colonial Curb Appeal Help
Comments (3)Great home and yard to work with. Keeping in mind your current roof color and siding, I would keep the shutters and add some to the bottom window in a pacific blue color and your door in a Terra cotta color. A white carriage style garage door. if replacing the garage door isn't an option paint it white and get the magnetic handles and hinge decorative accents for it until then. Add white trellises over the garage and across the bottom of the second story. Flowers (lavender and rose trees) to line the driveway. a good flowering ground cover at the base if your tree and a mix of flowers to by the house to fill in flowers beds....See Morenm_prince
