Garrison Colonial Curb Appeal Help

Just moved in and want to improve the curb appeal! I want to get rid of the light brown accent color on the shutters and garage door. I am planning on making the shutters black and the garage door either white or black. Any other suggestions?

Yes, remove shutters for sure. I would go white with garage since black will be too dominant. Also think navy would be nicer for the front door since your roof is brown. Add shrubbery in front of the window (at a minimum) and an updated porch light. Would also consider beefing up white trim, particularly horizontally between 1st and 2nd floor.

Great home and yard to work with.

Keeping in mind your current roof color and siding, I would keep the shutters and add some to the bottom window in a pacific blue color and your door in a Terra cotta color.

A white carriage style garage door. if replacing the garage door isn't an option paint it white and get the magnetic handles and hinge decorative accents for it until then.

Add white trellises over the garage and across the bottom of the second story.

Flowers (lavender and rose trees) to line the driveway. a good flowering ground cover at the base if your tree and a mix of flowers to by the house to fill in flowers beds.

The most major consideration in the street appeal department is fixing the retaining wall. It looks cheap because it doesn't have "returns," and extremely "busy." It should be extended farther forward (because the slope continues) and limited to maybe 3 levels, as opposed to the sawtooth and innumerable levels. The taller shrubs along the steps look obstructive and messy (as no rhyme or reason for their arrangement), The bald mulch is not a good flavor, and having the turf lawn extend into the sloped area seems like unpleasant maintenance and a shortcoming in the bed geometry. I'd opt for a lot of groundcover instead. The low hanging tree limbs need to be removed. Whether the Jap. maple can be cleaned up and retained ... we would need to see a picture of its trunk relative to the house wall. I'm not trying to show the capabilities of planting in the picture, but just the walls and logical bed line.

I love it without the shutters, but since it's such a classic (and stunning) home, shutters are probably in order. I'll let others comment on that. What would add layering to what you think is a flat look is amazing landscaping. Get a designer from a small garden center to help design a landscaping plan that will add shapes, color, and depth to your beautiful house. Note: this house doesn't need shutters since the gardens add so much to the house.

The color is a custom mix. I always loved the color of a certain house in a nearby neighborhood, so when I saw the owner working in the yard I stopped and asked her about the color. She said it was a custom mix from the previous owner, and sent me to the local paint shop where they had the color on file. If I can find a can with the details, I'll post a pic. It's the perfect greige. Not too gray, not too beige, and it looks great in all lighting.

You have a lovely property! I don’t think it would take much to ramp up the curb appeal. Go for a dark charcoal roof and keep the siding as is. I love the idea of a sheltered front entry (your guests will love it too on a rainy day) and you’ve got plenty of room to add a roof or portico. The part of your house that juts out a little and includes your front door, I would remove the siding and add a beautiful stone laminate to that whole area, ground to roof. Choose a grey stone in a tone that is halfway between the dark charcoal roof and the lighter siding. I would build a large garden on the garage wall that contains at least one big tree. That would give that wall some interest. Rebuild the sidewalk around this garden and build more into your yard rather than close to the house. You have a large property and your existing sidewalk looks odd so close to the house. Make sure sidewalk is wide enough so that 2 people can comfortably walk side by side, at least 5 feet wide. Add more landscaping with tall plantings to balance the height of your house. Good luck. You’ve got great bones here.

I replaced the shutters with black ones. Working on landscaping currently. What color garage door and front door do you think would looks best? Do you think I need to paint the garage door or does the brown work with the roof?
