Large Kitchen w/ Island Layout - feedback please!
Comments (49)However, if you usually cook using the cooktop, and if you, say, cut your onions and soften them as you cut your chicken and then brown the chicken as you cut your vegetables, in the pattern that the vast majority of cooktop recipes call for, having the cooktop behind you is incredibly annoying if you don't have a helper. So for cooks who use the cooktop heavily, prepping with your back to the cooktop IS a major issue. I know that a lot of people don't really cook, but if you do, it matters. You have several options: prep next to the stove as soon as you start using it and turn your back on the people at the island that you put there so you would face them; prep everything on the island before you start cooking and add 20 minutes to your cooking time every night; or turn your back to the stove and either burn things or switchback and forth a lot, also wasting a lot of time. But I suppose CPArtist is a special person with eyes on the back of her head. Or she doesn't really cook. I do cook, although not frequently. And if you had spent lots of time on this forum like myself and most of the other regulars, you'd know that Kitchen work studies have shown that you spend the following amount of time at each major kitchen activity: Prepping - 70% (some studies put this number higher - more like 75%) Cooking - 10% Cleaning up - 20% So based on that study, most cooks spend the majority of their time prepping the food, not cooking it. And most people prefer to prep while they are facing their guests, family, etc. So once again, prepping with your back to the cooktop is not a problem. And quite honestly, most people I know, including the chefs I'm friendly with, will tell you to prep everything in advance and not as you go....See MoreFlooring/counter/wall colors for open living/kitchen w/ wood ceiling
Comments (8)Cabinets are fine and I like the idea of black hardware. If you choose slate look tile, make sure it's a warmish shade rather that gray as you need to compliment the ceilings with warm tones, not cool. Would you put rugs down? Dying to hear your plans for resurfacing the fireplace, please choose medium to light tones as you don't want to darken that area. If it was my place I would use wood floors only because it speaks to the organic look of the room. Keep us posted....See MoreYour help, please, with last few choices to finish living/dining area?
Comments (7)If I could have white or off-white blinds and trim, I wouldn’t even be adding drapery panels. My reason for adding off-white panels is to “lighten” and “brighten” the space. As I wrote in the first paragraph: I am currently renting this 1440 sq ft apartment in a large complex, and I am not allowed to change wall color, blinds, etc. I am working within these limits. Fortunately, the blinds are much less noticeable when open. They were closed only to control the light for the photos. Apparently using the word “bright” was misleading. I’m not referring to color. The choices I’ve made since moving here include glass-top tables, clear acrylic (counter stools), reflective metal finishes, and off-white fabrics in a variety of textures for throws, pillows, and small ottomans. They really do lighten and brighten the space. I want to continue that as I select the drapery panels. I have gradually moved toward a much more minimal style, but case goods that are decades old already had clean lines so I didn’t have to start all over. Eclectic and developed over time, this style gives me a serene simplicity that I really like. [My thanks goes to Houzz contributors as well as local designers.] The New Zealand wool area rug is new, and it took me over a year to find: I love it. It is intentionally similar in color to the porcelain tile, adding texture and picking up every color in the sofa. The questions I’m asking are re-stated below: 1) Which hanging style of panels would give me “neat stacks” and complement my furnishings? 2) Where might I find a 42”w x 21”d x 18”h rectangular coffee table with [a thick] glass top and simple metal legs similar to the EA Ferri ottomans as shown in the first photo at the top of this dilemma?...See MoreNeed help selecting paint colors for my open kitchen / living / dining
Comments (1)Don’t panic…I just finished a living/dining room with high ceilings and it came out so gorgeous. B.M. Mesquite. Looks wonderful with Hale Navy. Unfortunately the inspiration photo has used purple, but I hope you see the possibility....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
