Exterior paint dilemma on a 1966 brick ranch
Comments (10)Thanks for the helpful replies. LWO: Yes, the next step is to start redesigning the landscaping. I've already planted the seed in my dh's mind about replacing the cracked concrete driveway and widening the front walkway. That would lead to making the front porch a bit bigger and maybe adding a little patio under the window- sigh...I hope the seed germinates. Eggplant? I thought of that color initially and dh almost choked. I thought a grayish green w/o any blue would work with the brick. @Pal: Darn it! I thought I had that color wheel figured out. Next question: dh and neighbors think we should paint the trim around the garage doors a contrasting color. I'm trying to stay firm about making that side of the house monochrome but am beginning to waffle. Would using larger house numbers painted a contrasting color work instead of painting the trim? I could use the same color as the main door to tie it together. Maureen...See More90s house exterior needs help
Comments (3)Leave the railings, they define the porch. As to the brick, I think it is too dark as it is, I would white wash it or paint it the siding color. Otherwise I think it’s a really pretty house....See MoreDilemma: Exterior paint color to downplay pink/orange brick
Comments (15)I guess I didn't say that I am trying to deemphasize the brick. Not sure if you can tell from the photo but they are Roman style bricks, lacking the interesting dark colors and white stain of more traditional flat brick. It seems like blues and greys would make those bright pink and orange tones pop. My original thinking was white with dark accents. But I do like the dark exterior colors that are popular now. I worry that the dark colors will just make the bright pink/orange really stand out. Ultimately I guess I am looking for the house to look fresh without changing the good bones that it has. I am trying to embrace the look of the brick. Someone want to talk about how to tone down the brick without painting it?...See MoreHelp with updating 90's exterior please...
Comments (7)I was saying get a professional landscaper via a small garden center in your area who can look at the house and yard and recommend ways to set off your lovely home that will make you look at it differently. A garden designer can design easy-care beds even if you don't have a green thumb. The right native perennial plants, trees, shrubs, and groundcovers for your location, light, and water conditions will give your house a makeover. It's a professional job, however, and not something done out of the Home Depot garden section. If you want to tweak things, stain the pillars the light cedar shown in that photo I posted and match simple railings and a front door to it. I don't care for the limewash look, but if you do then someone else on the thread can help you out there. I personally think your brick looks fine. Good luck!...See Morepscheele
