New This Week: 3 High-Contrast Luxe Kitchens
These extra-large spaces stun with some of the most stylishly elegant materials and features money can buy
Soaring ceilings, generous doses of high-end materials, a powerful sense of luxury and sophistication — these are what dream kitchens are made of. See how the three kitchens below follow this recipe to success.
Other special features: High-end appliances built in to custom rift-cut oak paneling. Walk-in pantry. Two sinks. Pot filler. Reclaimed-wood flooring and hemlock beams “lend a rustic, texture-rich element that helps to soften the otherwise contemporary design,” says designer Marie Flanigan.
“Uh-oh” moment: “The massive slabs of Calacatta marble definitely presented a design challenge due to their sheer weight and size,” she says.
Paint on walls: Alabaster, Sherwin-Williams; floor and ceiling beams: M&M Lumber; vent hood: The Lonestar Range Hood Co.; pendant lights: Allen in polished nickel, Ralph Lauren collection, Visual Comfort & Co. via Lighting Commerce; cabinets: white lacquer and brushed rift-cut oak with veneer stain, Eggersmann USA; bar stools: Cantoni (discontinued)

Designer secret: “With such a vast, open space, developing a design that was just the right proportion was critical,” says designer Scott Grandis. “Designing elements that would not dwarf the homeowners or make them feel like the space was being wasted was perhaps the single most tedious task.”
“Uh-oh” moment: “Where in the heck are the appliances going to go?” Grandis says. “Architecturally, the floor plan was so open, there wasn’t any space that was ‘designated’ for any kind of appliances. The solution to this was to build a multifunctional tall island. This freestanding piece serves the kitchen by housing the oven and refrigeration, while the back side serves as a corking and serving area to the wine room.”
