Comments (10)I am with GG48. Fungi around plants are to be appreciated rather than feared. The organic material simply breeds bacteria, fungi and other critters. There are good and bad of everything. The good guys eat either decaying matter or other "bugs". The bad guys eat plants. Using organic matter results in a high population of non harmful worms, bacteria, fungi etc. This population helps to naturally control the plant pathogenic version. Fungi in particular are mean, territorial, violent organisms. They do not take kindly to competition and will go to war over territory. Even the various 'good' fungi will go to war where their territory overlaps with other good fungi. What will not happen is a pathogenic fungi spore falls into the middle of this and be able to grow. It will become food....See MoreUh oh, more roses appeared on the back porch...
Comments (17)Ingrid, sorry if I wasnt clear, Sophy's Rose was Frank's favorite - not sure what Mark Chamblee's favorite Austin is. Frank was a valued and long time employee of Chamblees - he was always there to give advice, propogate and what he didnt know about roses probably wasnt worth knowing. He passed away several years ago [maybe 8-10, I will have to ask his niece Maria when I go on Wednesday] from complications of diabetes. I would always ask him what he thought about this or that rose and he would tell me honestly. I have found his advice about Sophy's Rose right on - I have 2 of them and they are healthy, well shaped and bloom lots. I sure miss Frank - but Maria was his protege and learned so much from him and now with her experience at Chamblees is filling his shoes with great capability. Comments (7)Cathe - welcome to the forum! Our FAQ has a lot of information on host plants and nectar plants and raising butterflies. If you plant both hosts and nectar plants, you'll get lots of butterflies. The butterflies lay eggs on specific host plants and that's how we get our "baby" caterpillars. The egg hatches, the caterpillar emerges, and becomes a virtual eating machine until it reaches a certain size, after which it pupates, forms a chrysalis, and emerges after approx. 2 weeks, as a butterfly. You live in Texas, the state which has the most butterfly species of any in the nation. Lucky girl! The Dallas Lepidopterist Society has a great website on host plants and nectar plants as well and lists the butterflies most commonly found in Texas. Feel free to ask questions on the forum - we welcome anyone who is interested in gardening for the butterflies. Comments (11)"It is perhaps a pessimistic view of the power of Oprah." Boy, no kidding! Don't get me wrong, I like Oprah, but enough is enough of people being her "Lemmings." Bee, that's hilarious (but sad) that you only got candy. I keep the TV on all day as background noise since I'm alone (it's so quiet here in the country), and I kid you not, I've never seen him actually decorate. Oh, I see him rearrange furniture in someone's home and make suggestions on what to put there, but as far as his tastes go? I haven't the foggiest idea. Why doesn't he do a show on "layering", like the topics Jim does? Teach us HOW to do it. Or using "texture" in our homes? Decorating styles and ideas are endless! Home decorating has never been more popular than it is now, and he's just blowing it. It's obvious that people did tune in for decorating ideas just by reading this board in the past & talking to my friends, and all of us "decorators" have tuned out because he talks about everything BUT decorating! So I can't judge his talent because he never shows us. Strange....See Moremtnrdredux_gw
