Inferior supermarket roses
Comments (7)"What's with this type of rose that is being sold at supermarkets today?" Cheaper The prices do get raised for Valentines Day, supply and demand and the wrong season for roses to be blooming in. The grocery stores are going to place larger orders way ahead of time, those roses have to be shipped to their distribution center, put on pallets with the other grocery items and trucked to the market. The market has to unpallet and finally those roses are put back in water to be revived. Just like a fresh strawberry grown in the farmers field is nothing like the strawberry one buys in the chain grocery store. Not knocking the grocery business, it just the reality of how things have to be done to bring them to the market by you at a cost we can afford. A florist may send their buyer to meet the plane bringing in the roses, or pick them from the flower market just hours before you purchase them. Best bet is to buy roses when they are blooming locally and purchase other flowers/plants/cakes/chocolates that do not need the holding times....See MoreMom's Chocolate Cake Recipe
Comments (7)There's only one chocolate cake that I make, and it's a chocolate-zucchini cake. The whole family likes it, and I don't ice it....just plain with ice cream is delicious. The zucchini makes it moist. Having said all that, I guess because I make chocolate cake so infrequently, I just buy the cocoa that's cheap. OTOH, maybe "because" I make it so infrequently I should splurge on good, Hershey cocoa. :)...See MoreFlat Chocolate Chip Cookies
Comments (29)IÂm sorry to report that IÂve taken a serious break from the Chocolate Chip Cookie quest. The journey has cost me pounds of butter, sugar, and weight, only to realize that each individualÂs pursuit is unique and personal i.e. "my cookie may not be your cookie." That said, IÂm enjoying reading everyoneÂs success and that picture is enough to make me rethink the issue, Jo. Confession: I grew up on Crisco cookies (with the ½ tsp. Water), with enough cookie to match chocolate, puffy yet chewy, etc., and I loved them. I now make "Marvelous Marble Squares" from my old "The Happy Cooker" Jewish cookbook, which are butter based, chocolate chips swirled on top baked in jelly roll pan. Big bang for the time, crowd pleaser and closest to my memories. Cathy in SWPA...See MoreChocolate covered cherries, do you?
Comments (58)I've always loved the Cella's too, light or dark, I don't care, and they're about the cheapest you can buy. I thought I'd forego them this year, but this thread made my mouth water. Had to go to WalMart yesterday so I thought I'd pick up a box, but couldn't find the Cella's! I didn't buy the off brand, but will look around for the real thing. I did see some that were blueberry though. I've never seen those before. Not a blueberry lover, I got a couple of boxes for my son. Years ago I worked with a gal whose aunt made homemade chocolate covered brandied cherries. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!!!...See MoreEileen
