Shower Tile chipped in new bathroom addition
Comments (4)Looks like bullnose on an outside corner? Tough to say what would structurally stress an area like that. A shower rod? Good news, it's on the edge of the installation. Removal and repair would not be difficult. And the location minimizes the effective compromising of any waterproofing membrane that might be underneath. Often times cracking of tile occurs on joints. Joints in framing. When new framing settles, or where new framing meets old. Differential movement within the wall. Near the top corner of an exterior window, etc....See MoreShould I be concerned with my bathroom tile installation? Help!
Comments (18)This should have all been handled in the prep. Was completely avoidable with the proper prep. But what we don't know (or understand) is why the shower walls were built out so far. One common approach would be to build jambs. Again, this is all part of the planning. Doubt the walls were that far out of plumb that you couldn't achieve a better result than you have. You should have been given your options before anything was done as what you have is not standard. There are so many ways to rectify this in planning. This stuff hurts my head....See MoreCarrera Marble - Does anyone have it around their stove or bathrooms?
Comments (6)No issues with grease as long as you seal your counters and are reasonable about cleaning up after cooking. Oils can sit on the counter for a while, but it’s preferable to not leave them overnight. I’m pretty clean while I’m cooking - if I make a mess, I just clean it up. Anything I don’t want to deal with that night goes in the sink for tomorrow morning. We’ve had some minor etching, but it’s all from other people using the kitchen, not from me. People who should know better...we specifically told our babysitter “nothing acidic” and she put lemon juice on the counter “because it is natural”. A caterer put a container of fruit salad on the counter and left it there and it made an etched ring from the juice. When I personally cook in the kitchen, no issues. if you get a marble counter, would recommend a workstation type of sink where you can put the cutting board inside the sink and keep any acidic mess contained. I love love love my marble counters. They feel so much nicer than quartz. The marble has some variation in it and I think it is so beautiful. It’s nice and cold and just feels REAL. The stains and etching are avoidable if you aren’t a complete slob in the kitchen and are mindful of other people using the kitchen. I would never use it in my beach house where we have tons of guests all the time....See MoreMarble Tile Delivery - Bathroom remodel
Comments (12)A professional tile contractor would inspect the tile (yes, all of it), reject those that are unacceptable, lay out the tile prior to installation for proper design and shading (and get your approval on all of the above). And the time required to do this would be billable labor to you. The professional may also refuse to set tile that he/she considers of poor quality. We purchase most tile for our clients at our trade discount (split that discount with them), track orders, pick up tile and inspect. When problems occur (such as broken/defective), we handle the return and replacement and often the client doesn't even know there had been an issue. We have influence with our suppliers and they will take care of our needs in short order. There is a cost involved when you use a professional tile contractor. There is another type of "cost" involved when you don't. I'm not suggesting that you haven't hired a PRO, but now is the time to involve your contractor. (actually they should have approved the selection prior to ordering). If they are a PRO they will be familiar with natural stone and advise you regarding any issues. I can't comment on the other imperfections that you observe without inspecting the tile. Your contractor "should" be able to do so. They should also be familiar with the installation standards and methods for natural stone. So get them involved. Good luck with your project....See MoreHALLETT & Co.
