Shower Tile chipped in new bathroom addition

Hi there. My bathroom addition was completed 7 months ago. About 3 months in, I noticed that a tile had chipped. It is super high up in a corner, and there was no impact to it. I've attached a picture. As you can see, the chip is spreading to crack across the grout. Any thoughts on what could have caused this? Is there an issue with the installation of the corner that can be fixed by replacing the tile, or could this be a larger issue for the installation? Knowing my contractor, he will claim that the tile is defective (I purchased the tile separately) and try to charge me for any repairs. I am still under warranty for workmanship. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Give your contractor a call and see what he says. Be reasonable, please.

Hi Joseph. I did actually already contact my contractor, about this, and deep pits in the grout, and a towel bar that is falling off. He has told me they don't fall under a workmanship warranty and he will charge me to fix any of it.

Thanks for your nice comments! The vanity is just about 60", I love the space... Looking at doing a master bath remodel, and would hate to have two sinks in that space. The showers inside dimensions are 55 inches on the 2 long walls, 26 inches on the two shorter walls, with the opening 33 .5 inches. We did this for a roll in seated bath chair, which fit perfectly, and I think would work great for bathing assisted shower. Unfortunately my father in law passed away, so we never did get to use the shower for its intended use.

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

The answer to your question is another question: How much money do you want to spend and how much renovating do you want to do? So, yeah, that faucet trim is dated. The tub spout not fitting to the wall looks bad also. You have some options: $ 1. Replace the insides of the valve to stop the leak 2. Also replace the trim 3. Replace the tub spout and fix it so that it meets the tile (shorten the stub). Or $$$$ Replace the tub, retile, and put in new shower faucets. Build out the wall so that it fixes that "shelf" What I would do: I would go with Option #1 to fix the leak and make it look much better without dropping a huge amount of money. If, at some later date, you want to do significantly more work, you can. Usually when you first move into a new home money is tight... so do enough work to make this look 100% better and not leak, but don't drop big coin on it right now. What I would not do: I would not cut into the tile to replace the faucet. It's not going to go back well.

Where is it in the shower (pic from further back would help)? Is the stain the length of the tile? Only one corner? What kind of tile? What is the substrate behind the tile? What is the waterproofing? How was the tile set/installed?

Looks like bullnose on an outside corner?

Tough to say what would structurally stress an area like that. A shower rod?

Good news, it's on the edge of the installation. Removal and repair would not be difficult. And the location minimizes the effective compromising of any waterproofing membrane that might be underneath.

Often times cracking of tile occurs on joints. Joints in framing. When new framing settles, or where new framing meets old. Differential movement within the wall. Near the top corner of an exterior window, etc.

I would give him the choice to fix it for free or "buy" a very poor online review if he doesn't, although I don't think you want him back, nor do I think he wants to ever see you again.

Hire it done and send him the bill. It's worth a shot.
