Did you use any of your home canned foods for holiday meals?
Comments (20)I was just here checking to see if anyone was still canning anything, since I canned beef broth today. I raised the heritage Blue Slate turkey that we had at Thanksgiving, along with the fingerling potatoes which store very well in the cellar. Pumpkin pie was made from home canned pumpkin and an appetizer of a savory cheesecake was topped with my Habanero Gold. Mulled cider from cider we pressed and I had in the freezer stayed warm in the crockpot. Christmas thumbprint cookies contained homecanned jam and the green beans were from my basement "store" and my stepson roasted another one of those turkeys. The guys all doused theirs with my home canned hot sauce. All the Christmas baking was done with eggs from the freezer too, and the pie was made with homecanned apple pie filling. Throughout the holidays we snacked on fresh tortilla chips and salsa that I had canned (Yes, I'm THAT Annie). Oh, I made the ricotta for the lemon ricotta pancakes too, as well as the yogurt. Enchiladas made with leftover turkey were topped with tomatillo sauce that I made and froze when the last of my tomatillos vines were threatened by frost. My kids are coming over tomorrow and we're having beef roulades, with the onions in the rolled beef coming from the root cellar and the beef from my barnyard, good organic grassfed beef, a Hereford/Highland cross. Sweet and sour kale from our bumper crop of greens this year, home canned green beans with bacon for the grandkids and the cheesecake will be topped with homecanned blueberry topping. Appetizers will be venison sausage and homemade liverwurst from that same grassfed beef, pickled beets and Linda Lou's 10 day sweet pickles So, yeah, I use a lot of my canned goods. Comments (19)I don't know people who only sit for a couple of days. As I said, different groups have different customs. "Shiva" is a form of the number seven which refers to the length of the initial period of mourning observed by the close family. There are many stages of the mourning process. After the first seven days are the thirty, and then the eleven months. Unless they're close to the family, the same people don't necessarily come every day of the seven, but enough people to conduct a service will come every day, so the services and mourner's prayers can be said in the home. If there aren't enough people, the neighbors will come over for the services. If the mourners are close enough by to get there in time, you just show up every day. Even though there isn't always a meal, per se, someone will put out some of the food that has been brought, since eating together is an important ritual. It's also easier for those in deep mourning if the food just appears, and someone hands them a plate, rather than having to organize meals and worry about feeding guests. People in mourning will also gather to eat during the extended mourning period, but won't attend parties and other revelry. Continuing into the longer periods, we support them with food and with invitations to meals. The salmon salad that I can't look at without wondering who died is really the kind of thing one takes on that first day. Besides being neither milk nor meat, it's made with canned salmon and staple ingredients like celery, and doesn't require shopping. Since the funeral is usually the day after the death, and always no more than three days, that's a consideration....See MoreWeek 163 - What non American Thanksgiving food do you have?
Comments (51)Eam, beachem, cpartist, and all who gave recipes for purée ing turkey, thank you! I didn't see them till now, but I know the caregiver made purée with the leftovers. Mom's sister popped in on the way to her son's, just as we eer sitting down, so she helped Mom while DH and I oversaw things (and ate!). The carrots, Cook's Magazines boiled carrot recipe (I know, I know, who needs a recipe for boiled carrots? I do.) came out soft enough that she could manage them just fine, yet just firm enough for everyone else. I passed on the sweet potatoes, it was one too many things. I used Mom's wedding china, her gorgeous silver, and the damask napkins. She didn't recognize any of it, but it color-matched the family room where we ate better than their dining room :) Dad was in tears at the table, it was his first time home since August. The house is his baby, he designed it with an architect, his own company built it, on family land. Probably our last Thanksgiving in that house. Time for new traditions....See Moredo you have food delivery!
Comments (41)I looked into the grocery delivery out of curiosity and maybe to try once just for fun. I guess I'm cheap cos I couldn't justify it. haha They add on an extra percentage to the groceries themselves plus the delivery. The main grocery store where I live has curbside and delivery. For delivery they charge extra for delivery and for a person to shop for them. I understand people need to get paid but I also understand this type of service is either an extreme luxury or extreme necessity depending on the situation. I'm able so I will do it myself. :) I don't mind and I like to see what I'm buying when it comes to groceries. In the 13 years we've lived at our house I'd say we've had food delivered less the 5 times. We'd rather go somewhere or eat at home....See MoreNinapearl
