Please Recommend a Dwarf Cherry Tree

Hi All,

I was wondering if someone could recommend a dwarf cherry tree, particularly a sweet variety, that will grow no larger than 8 feet tall and wide? We already have a Stella cherry tree, so something that would pollinate with it would be ideal.

Depending on what rootstock it is grafted to, any sweet cherry variety can be maintained at 8-10'. I'd look for ones grafted to a Gesila or Clare rootstock.

Since Stella is self fertile, it can serve as a pollinator to any other sweet cherry with a compatible bloom time.

trees do not stop growing at some magical height nor width ... most size estimates are at 10 years.. and you can expect them to be twice as big at 20 years ...

soooo .. as gal noted.. its up to you to maintain it at whatever size and shape you wish.. think topiary ... ALL trees are prunable ...

make sure you learn the proper pruning time.. to ensure you arent removing embrionic fruit/buds.. etc

Hi, Don555 and all -- So to quote Hyacinth Bucket, we are unanimous that CJ and its siblings don't need much care. I, for one, will not water mine again, unless it's really obvious they need it, like if we have super dry weather and their leaves start drooping. Besides 3 CJs, 2 CPs, and 2 Bali Evans, I also bought 2 Meteors from SLN. Their advice on watering is a little different from what I read on this forum. From the SLN handbook: WATERING This is undoubtedly the most important [last three words in italics] aspect in establishing any new tree or shrub. After planting, follow-up watering is a must. We recommend 5-10 gallons of water per tree regularly (regularly might mean daily, three times a week, or a good soaking every weekend) for the entire first growing season; especially during the dry months of late July through mid-September. Rain in the forecast does not excuse you from your watering chores. And so on. Looks like the difference between what's advised here and what's in the handbook may be the needs of new transplants versus established plants. In any case, as Don555 says, these cherries were developed in a semi-arid climate. My area actually gets an average of 37.97 inches of rain per year. It looks like young sour cherries may not need any watering. In my determination to follow the directions in the handbook, I didn't look at them critically. You are lucky to have had any cherries by now. Many people wait 4-5 yrs for their first fruit. If you remove the 3/1, you may have to wait yrs for any replacement to bloom. Keep the 3/1 and buy another tree. Bing is a very good pollinator for Rainier. It however is prone to split in rain, as is Rainier. A self fruitful variety like Sandra Rose, Sonata, Lapins, Skeena, or Sweetheart would be a good pollinator for Rainier, if they bloom together, and would not need another to pollinate itself. Bing and Rainier do bloom together. Sweetheart on a dwarfing rootstock like Giesla 5 blooms as fast as anything. It also matures later, which I think gets closer to your dry season. But it can overbear, giving small fruit of inferior guality. You solve that by severe pruning to remove fruit buds and force vegetative growth. The more dwarf JMs don't have really wide-spreading root systems, but they usually don't like full sun, so probably would struggle. I agree with Laceyvail - in this instance, a taller, narrow tree would be my choice. Heptacodium would be a good choice, as would serviceberry. Redbud is another possibility, but might be too wide, as they do spread. Look in a copy of Sunset Magazine Gardening Book for small trees - there should be a list toward the front or in the back. You should be able to get mature sizes and preferred exposures of the various trees from the listings.

Sorry, but trees DO have genetically programmed maximum heights.

A cherry on a dwarf rooting stock WILL stop growing at some 'magical width and height'. Furthermore, the cultivar Stella needs no pruning to fruit other than the removal of dead or crossing branches. It most definitely does not need to be topiarised.

The southeast climate is very challenging for sweet cherry, Ive killed several. Currently trying the University of Saskatchewan sour bush cherry which are pretty sweet but still sour too. They were doing great till this year, they lost thier leaves early. They were not well irrigated so I'm hoping it was that and not the cherry leaf spot problems I have had in the past.

They stay small and are grown on their own roots which could increase longevity in challenging climates like mine.

My dwarf Stella is actually a fair size tree. Maybe 12 feet. I don't prune it for size at all though, just took out some inner branching to make it more airy.
