Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Not sure what to do with this space between my stairs and closet.

I have this space between my stairs and coat closet. I don’t know what to do with it. I had pictures and nicknacks on it but everything gets dirty and dusty fast. The front door is across from it. Its worse now since we painted everything white. Does anybody have any good ideas?

Very odd space….maybe a larger sculpture with some color to fill the space in. Or a large plant if there’s light. But I like the sculpture idea.

I don't think chairs would make sense. You have limited height and I don't think anyone will ever sit there unless it was a space for small children. I know I would be uncomfortable there. That pretty much rules out all but the first table. Possibly the smaller desk at the taller end with some accessorizing in the corner. Another things to consider is that anything in that space still needs to be dusted and the floors around it cleaned. Maybe I'm sensitive to that because I'm tall and I have two dogs who are in shed mode --it's only 100 degrees outside, but I think I would tire of having to duck and clean in the shorter space. It seems your entry has space on that far wall for a table and possibly for a chair or two (hard to tell from just seeing the one side), so it doesn't seem like you need that space for a table. Personally, I like the idea of a bookcase, but I'd also not want it to get lost under the stairs. What is on the other side of that wall? This idea is not a move-in arrangement so long as an idea for a project, but I'd look at the possibility of putting in drawers or cabinets on the other side to take up about 2/3 of the depth and then bookshelves on the entry side. No furniture would be used under the stairs, but it might maximize your use of the space. Don't know what your needs are in combining two households, but it's an idea. The entry is appealing -- from the wood floors and stairs to the arch and the French doors -- lost of things to say come in and check me out. Looks like a lovely home. Enjoy making yours and mine into ours.

This might have been mentioned. (I didn't read everything.) If you had a groundcover below the trees, there stands a good chance that many leaves would disappear into it as they sift down, and then just convert to "mulch" over time. I don't think it looks good to have shrubs below the trees as it seems everything is competing visually with everything else. It could either be a tree form with groundcover below, or a shrub form that is allowed to cover all the ground space. Whatever plant (tree or shrub) you pick, if it's reasonably narrow, I wouldn't worry about some if it crossing the property line as that's just the way life is with limited space yards. It happens everywhere. The neighbor has the right to cut back to the property line. Also, I wouldn't worry that a plant is labeled necessarily as "tree" or "shrub". For small trees and large shrubs this is a massive "grey area." Many plants can fit either category depending on how you prune them.

Well, the under stairs plan is dead in the water. That wall is load bearing, and we would have to frame the opening with a beam. I don't think we are going to go that far. I am also realizing that we don't have enough counter space or prep space. I'm considering changing that double patio door to a tall window and single patio door. Then I can wrap around that corner and get space for countertop appliances that desperately need to be near the sink.

Things to consider in your stairs design: build by code or build by comfort? Read what the code says in your area for minimum rise and tread. Based on your ceiling height, the run and width of the stairs will be the minimum square feet. We built with 'aging in place' considerations so wanted our stairs to be easy to climb, that is, a slow rate of rise. This was listed as a requirement for our design when we started working with an architect. We did a rise less than code (we did 7.25") and a tread of 12". Our stairs are 4' wide and the run is 14'1" with 9 foot ceiling height between floors. They are very comfortable to climb. A friend has a 100+ year old house with a grand staircase and the rise is about 6 3/4". Interestingly, that rise feels too low. We used a rise of 7.25" for outdoor stairs, too - deck and garage to house. I kinda wished we had done a lower rise and wider tread on our deck stairs but we had to draw a line on costs since we were using composite decking material. Can we see a picture from further back? Is there a way to frame it in and become part of the closet?

It is so odd. I would love to know the reasoning behind it. What is underneath those two steps?

A finish carpenter can remove them, but basket with seasonal greenery or flowers or grasses can look nice......big and fat.

Could you get someone to build it into a corner cabinet? Then you could set a plant or framed photos on top and have storage for hats/ gloves next to the coat closet or store other things.

Could add a planter box on lower level and plants’ height and visual weight will be all you need, as upper ledge will just act as a backdrop.

Remove the one step and fill the space with live plants if you get enough light.Probably not a sculpture giving everyone the finger which is what that looks like. It is also heplful to show the whole entry So post a couple mor epics here in a comment DO NOT start another post.

I guess it's too far from the entry for an umbrella stand, which was my first thought. It's really unfortunate. Maybe you could find two interesting vases that could stand together on the top shelf and call it a day?
