Thank you all! Cat_mom, I had heard about that velvety matte texture in Aura. I once had dark walls in Restoration Hardware's "velvet wall finish" and loved them-also not flat-flat but instead a nice visual texture and physical feel. Thinking Aura might be similar. So here is a follow-up question. I'm painting our north-facing (but still quite good light--maybe reflecting off garage?) bedroom in BM Aura Barrista, a medium chocolate Affinity color with subtle red undertone. ( I chose warmer than beautiful, dark Bittersweet because of the north light.) My husband is on board with this, but nervous the room will be too dark. To boost the light in the room a bit I went with Aura eggshell (apparently a bit shinier than Regal eggshell) when I gave the builder my color list the other day. Anybody think I should switch back to Aura matte in this grown-up room--knowing that Aura is washable in matte and not dead flat--to keep that velvety texture of the matte? Or does the eggshell still have that? Thanks for your thoughts!

Here's an interesting take on whites: Whether it's choosing a trim color, a main wall color or exterior color, white can frustrate and confuse even those who consider themselves having a good eye for color. There are cool whites, warm whites, whites with a number of undertones such as green or blue and whites that shift in different lights or times of day. Often it is recommended to use cooler whites with cooler colors or more bright colors while applying warmer whites with warmer or more muted colors. In spaces with low natural light, white can often look gray or yellowish. But my biggest rule is that there is always room to break color rules when it is your space you are choosing colors for. Your preferrence and comfort with color should always prevail. So what are some tried and true whites that designers and color experts often turn to? Many color consultants prefer a slightly warmer white without veering off into the cream palates. Benjamin Moore's biggest selling paint color happens to be Linen White. Experts often swear by this color for almost any situation. It is a very warm white that tends to work well with other colors. Ivory White is also a favorite as well as Bavarian White. For cooler whites, Benjamin Moore's Montgomery White, Decorator White and Super White are popular for their crispness and trueness. Pratt and Lambert's Silver White is also hard to go wrong with as well as Behr's Moon White. Benjamin Moore's Atrium white is a well loved white but can have a blue undertone to it in some light. My 2 cents. I'd skip Navajo white. I think every track home in San Diego (and probably beyond) was painted Navajo white in the 1980's. Every painted surface including doors and ceilings, including mine. I never liked it, but lived with it for years because it was just too much trouble and expense to repaint everything. Maybe that's why it's a big seller. Been kicking myself since because our paint match wood shutters also need to be refinished to match the white trim and doors we have now. To me the Navajo white has a greenish undertone and looks kind of dirty compared to other colors. Nicotine White is what it's disparaging called here. Can't tell you what to have only what you shouldn't and that would be 1980's track home Navajo White! I'm sure linen and a million other colors are better. When we repainted we went with Botony Beige fron Frazee. On the paint chip it looked slightely darker in tone, but on the walls it's not and it has a more neutral to warm base than the Navajo. Every room in my entire home is painted in BM Navaho White. I have very large windows and window walls in pretty much every room, and facing every direction. The rooms all read "creamy white" and not yellow but, that said, there is enough yellow in this paint so that the walls don't clash with any of the Mexican Talavera tile we've used in here. The white in Talavera tiles does have a slight yellow cast to it, and it took me a while to find the right White to look white but also work with my tile.
