BM White Dove looking too cream/dingy - color/finish help!
Comments (17)breezygirl, thanks for your input - it really does look yellow green in this room, no matter what time of day. I don't think I'll be using it, too bad I stupidly bought an entire gallon already! I did pick up a bunch of samples of whites from BM and Behr (while I was at HD to pick up the sample tile) to study over the next week or so, and thankfully I have not done all the work of cabinet painting - I'm just out $45 for the gallon of White Dove, better to cut my losses now and repaint the ceiling when I do the cabinets rather than go to all that work and not be happy. The subway tile is a soft white but not as yellow-green as the White Dove, and looks GREAT with the James River Gray and the appliances etc. I'll be taking pics throughout the project to document, I'll either be really happy at the end or I'll have filled my kitchen with a lumpy mass of concrete! To me, this is great fun although there is often a point about halfway through when I just wonder why I'm doing it, don't think it will ever come out right... but when it ends up well in the end the feeling of accomplishment is worth it. It's actually the second time I have made a major mistake purchasing white paint. At least this time it was only 1 gallon. When I was painting and doing flooring in the whole house (had less than 14 days to finish everything and move in as we only had a short term apartment after selling our condo) I bought *4 gallons* of Super White for the ceilings for some silly reason - having chosen Mascarpone for the walls (I thought I had to do "plain" white on the ceilings. Partway through the first gallon I realized it looked terrible. I just hated the idea of wasting that much money on the paint, but could not stand the idea of finishing the job that I would hate. So I bought more Mascarpone and did ceilings the same color (which looks great) and tried to sell the Super White unopened cans on Craigslists to no avail. Ace wouldn't let me return them even for a store credit or restock fee :( I ended up donating it. I thought I learned my lesson but I was so sure that White Dove looked lovely in everyone else's photos and was such a universal favorite (and who could not like the name) that I would love it too. Lesson learned - test the color in your own space even if it's "just" white! On the other hand, they do not have test sizes for the whites in my paint store and a quart is $17 vs $45 for the gallon - so it's better just to buy the gallon....See MoreToo many BM whites to choose from! Comments (9)We just painted our walls with Super White (BM, mixed up in Aura paint--matte finish) and LOVE it! We had had most of our upstairs painted with BM White 01 in Regal AquaVelvet (eggshell finish) a little over 2 years ago as part of our kitchen reno. Lately, it had been looking "brittle" to me and I wasn't sure if it was the paint quality, the finish, or the white itself causing my dislike (we'd recently painted a small bathroom with an Affinity color in Aura matte and love the color, the texture, everything about it). We had the upstairs re-painted in the Super White about a month ago, and it's made such a difference. It's a pure white--no undertones that we can tell, but the walls/rooms look so much warmer and more inviting (without the paint having any warm undertones whatsoever--it's a pretty bright white), yet it looks very crisp and clean. The matte finish is so velvey and rich, too. FWIW, we tried samples of Chantilly Lace mixed up in Aura matte on our walls (along with the Super White, White 01 and another white). To us, CL looked a bit yellow. We are very, very happy with our choice....See MoreA few questions about using Aura over various surfaces.
Comments (8)I don't see why you need more primer over pre-primed MDF. Most likely 1 coat of BM Aura Satin will be fine. If not, you can always put on another coat of paint. THe purpose of primer is for better bonding and stain coverage. You will be fine. I agree with above that "white" is very stark and cold. I like "Timid White" which is very clean and nearly white. A tad offwhite, but still clean and white appearing is "Sparkling Wine". I'm also not sure why you would mix semi and satin in the same room? I have Aura Satin throughout my kitchen (cabinets and trims) and it is very tough and washable. I also have a hallway with beadboard and trim and used Satin on both. I also have a chair rail in the dining room with picture molding on the bottom. It is all in white (sparkling wine actually) satin, including the drywall. I prefer eggshell finish on drywall for a little more washability over matte. I think the TSP substitutes probably don't work as well as real TSP, but better for the environment. Admittedly, that opinion is probably biased. It is hard to avoid 2 coats on ceiling. I think it depends on how long it has been and the color difference. Ceilings seem to absorb a ton of paint. I don't know the names you mentioned, but the best ceiling paint is thickest... less splattering better coverage. I also don't like pure white on a ceiling. I have used BM Linen White Flat on my last ceiling....See MoreBM blue accent for white painted cabinets?
Comments (8)becktheeng, Can I ask what blue you used? Yesterday afternoon I ran out to the paint store, because I just couldn't wait. We have fluorescent lighting in our kitchen (not my favorite for color) and so picked blue/greens with that in mind I thought all fluorescents looked the same, but these compact fluorescents gray down the colors that I chose. That doesn't make sense to me, because I thought fluorescent light made blues and greens pop more. The BM Bird's Egg is very gray in our light, the Peacock Blue ditto, and the only one which pops a little is the Water Drops. I love the Simply White in our kitchen - it has just the right amount of warmth in it. I am attaching a link I just found - Popular Mechanics posted tests on Fluorescent Lighting and color. They show different bulbs with a grid array of colors. Unfortunately, the color I like, blue/green, doesn't fare too well. I am still going to try changing my bulbs. I looked at your kitchen hoping for some inspiration, and was overwhelmed by the beauty of it. Since your blue is the tile, I guess you can't help with the paint. ps, I wish that I had the windows and view that your kitchen has! Just beautiful. The soapstone is so warm - and the glass tile backsplash is the blue I want. Sort of a greenish blue, like the ocean on a clear day. Your kitchen is looking fantastic. Hestia ps, I think I'll post the link as a new link as well - I hope it will help someone else. Here is a link that might be useful: Fluorescent Light & Color Test...See Moresusanlynn2012
