Choosing a rug for a office, transitioning styles.

Moved into a craftsman style home from 1940 and had mostly mid-century furniture and style, trying to work that into a more cozy, cottage, craftsman style.

Setting:

- Dark wood floors, trim, and doors (craftsman style)

- Off-white curtains with black curtain rod

- Black desk and monitors

- Twin day-bed, bedding TBD based on rug, dark wood frame.

- Wall paint: HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Architectural Gray (looks more lavender/gray in most light)

Vibe:

- craftsman

- cottage

- mid-century

- academic

Function/Price:

We have dogs so anything that is easy-er to clean is good

No white/light color border on the rug

Darker colors preferred.

Less than $400

Size 4x7 -ish

the room sounds kind of drab. a SW green tone wall would add some life to all the oak wood.

I think you nailed it with the William Morris rug. He was a major influencer on the Arts and Crafts movement and I think it goes well with the colors and vibe you want to create. Craftsman homes tend do be darker than most homes created today. You've caught that vibe and are sticking with it. (I think your vibe list is wonderful.) A lot of people these days would just paint out the wood and walls a bright white.

I’d recommend the same thing however, I’d align the side of each desk with the windows (not next to the windows, just aligned with them) and place a long narrow table between them for shared resources, like printers, etc., if there’s room (or add a large table top over both desks, creating a shared centre area). I’d also suggest you add drapes that cover the wall space, between the windows and some beautiful art on the wall facing the entry. As much as a rug could be quite beautiful, I’m not a fan of rugs on top of rugs, particularly when your current rug is patterned and your chairs have to be able to slide in and out. Look for some very colourful art and drapes to address your sense of “blah”. Your room and furniture are so neutral, you could choose almost any colour you like.

A rug is best sized to the ROOM, not just a seating area.. Appears ( as it is 8 x 10 you have now) you need at least a 12 x 16 rug to be proportional to the room. You can have anything you like created from broadloom, ( customized to the inch ) which is now GEARED to doing just that, with wonderful patterns and textures. Every broadloom maker knows the world is full of hardwood floors and generous rooms. Go to a good carpet store, It's not an online creation. You want that sectional completely on a rug..... and with a consideration of other seating added at some point, near the hearth. A too small rug chops and clutters a room. We know the flooring is there : )

Etsy sellers tend to have good sizing options and at times custom options, and I also like the color, fabrication, and style on those Etsy blue sheers. This is a pic from an Amazon review(er), with the plain white sheers. And I think a plain white would be my second choice for your space.

I like to have a beautiful landscape (piece of art) to look at. I have bought my own and take it with me when I change jobs. We all need to look up from the computer periodically to rest our eyes so I like to have something pretty to focus on. Art is very personal, so pick something that appeals to you. Since you're starting with gray almost any color(s) will work. You can get pictures you've taken on vacations blown up and framed too if you like that idea better.

Will your office chair be on wheels?

If so, you need a rug that won't sink the wheels or a plastic or glass matte laid over it

Something else you could consider is vinyl or canvas floor covering, which you might be able to find in a classic arts and crafts style and would function better for you and would be much cheaper. The best of them can be very nice if you hunt a bit on the internet.
