Choosing a rug for a office, transitioning styles.

Moved into a craftsman style home from 1940 and had mostly mid-century furniture and style, trying to work that into a more cozy, cottage, craftsman style.

Setting:

- Dark wood floors, trim, and doors (craftsman style)

- Off-white curtains with black curtain rod

- Black desk and monitors

- Twin day-bed, bedding TBD based on rug, dark wood frame.

- Wall paint: HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Architectural Gray (looks more lavender/gray in most light)

Vibe:

- craftsman

- cottage

- mid-century

- academic

Function/Price:

We have dogs so anything that is easy-er to clean is good

No white/light color border on the rug

Darker colors preferred.

Less than $400

Size 4x7 -ish

the room sounds kind of drab. a SW green tone wall would add some life to all the oak wood.

I think you nailed it with the William Morris rug. He was a major influencer on the Arts and Crafts movement and I think it goes well with the colors and vibe you want to create. Craftsman homes tend do be darker than most homes created today. You've caught that vibe and are sticking with it. (I think your vibe list is wonderful.) A lot of people these days would just paint out the wood and walls a bright white.

The office and foyer look to have good natural light while the kitchen does not. If that's true, based on the progression I outlined above, I would put the lightest color in the kitchen, a mid-range shade in the foyer and the darkest color on a color strip card in the office. Use the flooring as your key, and go with blue or yellow undertones, all depending on the warmth or "coolth" of the flooring color. For example, if you have yellow undertones you might try a selection of more pastel olive greens (usually yellow based) or if cool, some sage greens have more blue undertones. Christopher Lowell has an easy method to help you get a good neutral that is not influenced much by blue or yellow, but a true neutral for a good background. Here is his video "7 layers of design." At that height, I don't think it is a chair rail, it is a picture rail. Those are unique antique fixtures and hard to come by. I wouldn't remove, but I would not have a separate color for the lower half. I would consider the wall all one and paint it all the same, and then use the picture rail to hang the boards. Does not really matter how you paint, either light or dark. Lighting and window will make most difference in how "light" the room is. Vibrant colors can also make a room feel more cheery, if not "lighter." Up to you which way to go. A little green can go a long way, you might consider some plants. I hate watering them and have a tendency to kill indoor plants, even though I am a horticulturalist. I am like the plumber who always has a leaky faucet at home. I tend to ignore my houseplants. So your idea of an accent wall with some greenery might be a really nice and easy way to make the office a fun space.

I think a somewhat subdued, traditional/transitional rug would be lovely here. Something that anchors the entire room, but isn’t too matchy with your art. I don’t think you need a loud blue to compete with the artwork. It can stand alone. I love Houssaon’s first suggestion up there. Beautiful rug! Of course, I don’t know what other rooms/decor are near this open one, so these may not work. (Or you may not like the more traditional style.) With styles like these rugs, I’d get multi-colored and solid pillows, and especially some with texture. For example, West Elm. I agree about your trying to hone in on your own preferences including styles of furniture, wood tone and colors you actually like. And that it could also be somewhat “ eclectic” as long as things meshed. But if you’re not real confident of your own choices & style ( and that’s not a criticism- it’s more understanding whether you need more of a template and inspiration photos rather than building your decor more organically), or really just for inspiration, you might search under several different “ decor style” names and collect pics & see which decor styles keep turning up as your favorites. I know I would go more tropical/ British colonial because I love wicker, bamboo, richer warmer colors, have a high tolerance for various warm brown woods and prints. Others love paler woods, sand and sea color palette. No one right answer except try to avoid super cliché decor and cheap looking accessories.

Will your office chair be on wheels?

If so, you need a rug that won't sink the wheels or a plastic or glass matte laid over it

Something else you could consider is vinyl or canvas floor covering, which you might be able to find in a classic arts and crafts style and would function better for you and would be much cheaper. The best of them can be very nice if you hunt a bit on the internet.
