First I would repaint the walls. Gray walls and travertine-look tile floors is not a good mix ... you end up with walls that look blue and floors that look pink.

What color would you suggest? The electric was not turned on yet when I took these photos, so the color slightly off.

I would probably do a warm off-white that complements the floor. Keep it light and bright, without having to turn lights on during the day.

First, is it a gated community? How's the crime rate around you? Will you be importing the furniture? or shipping it over? Is this a 2nd home? Will it be vacant for long periods? Houses that are closed up with the high humidity will get muggy.....

It seems like a wonderful location for British Colonial decor.

Why either of those styles do you love them? IMO the inside of a home should be what you love no matter where the home is. I also really dislike any decor that starts leaning toward kitchy with fish and snorkaels you get my drift.

I agree about your trying to hone in on your own preferences including styles of furniture, wood tone and colors you actually like. And that it could also be somewhat “ eclectic” as long as things meshed. But if you’re not real confident of your own choices & style ( and that’s not a criticism- it’s more understanding whether you need more of a template and inspiration photos rather than building your decor more organically), or really just for inspiration, you might search under several different “ decor style” names and collect pics & see which decor styles keep turning up as your favorites.
I know I would go more tropical/ British colonial because I love wicker, bamboo, richer warmer colors, have a high tolerance for various warm brown woods and prints. Others love paler woods, sand and sea color palette. No one right answer except try to avoid super cliché decor and cheap looking accessories.

Plus agree with Patricia- though you gave these 2 main style directions, you’re not limited to those and shouldn’t limit yourself if you are drawn to something else, because you’d be forcing yourself to buy and collect things that have no meaning to you. Yes, there are some aspects of fabrics or furniture styles and use of colors that would seem too “ heavy” for that location, but that sort of thing can be sorted out as apart from the underlying vibe or style. You do need to aim for things that are compatible with the tones in the tile but that’s still a wide range.

We got a great deal on dining set. It was delivered today. I wanted a lighter wood, but this is growing on me. I added the pictures.

These photos are what I have mind when I think of coastal or tropical decor. I don't want boats and anchors.

You've posted pictures with basically clean, transitional elements. All have just an accent that suggests the tropics in any locale!

As with any home, anywhere, you begin with a scaled floor plan. Where am I sitting? What is the size of the room, what furniture, especially that seating will work best? What about places to set something down? That goes with the seating pla as does any tv and where it will sit or mount. You can't figure any of this out, minus a plan that includes all the dimensions of walls, windows, opening etc.

The same is true of the bedrooms.

Then comes rugs,,,,paint fabrics etc for all of this.

The touches that SUGGEST your surrounding is incorporated Caned chairs, a suggestive tropical print pillow, a raffia or sisal rug......plant life......basket pendants , fans or anything else?

I like your dinning room set. I've spent some time in San Juan...I don't remember seeing any stylish furniture stores. Do you have knowledge of nice furniture stores? Most online stores won't ship to San Juan. Here's a FREE Room Planner...click to see. I'd start with this....then decide the color of the wood...ect...

The dining room furniture wood tone is a nice contrast to the light floors. Agree to keep the walls lighter, at least in the main living areas, but if you wanted a cozier MBR you could go medium to darker there - your preference. The West Indies look with a mix of textures (instead of in your face tropical prints) is a good choice.

FWIW, we moved to the beach last year and brought our furniture with us - antiques and collections, and they work. Whatever you are drawn to will make the house your home.

I hope you'll keep posting photos of your purchases so we can follow along.

@nicole___ I just figured out how to reply to individual comments. The house is not in a gated community. It is in a safe neighborhood. Our neighbors are very nice and look out for us. Our next door neighbor actually took us to the furniture where we found the table set. It was 150 dollars for the entire set! I am officially moving there in February. The store gets furniture that is scratched or discontinued, similar to Marshall's but better deals.

Your spot on with the bargain hunting...the dinning table is gorgeous! San Juan...in my opinion...would be the perfect place to retire. I never get tired of going there. Congratulations on the house purchase and pending move....to paradise. I would love to be able to hike the El Yunque Rain Forest any time...or go to the waterfalls. Such a good move!

ffpalms 1st photo is how I would proceed. I still think finding what you want may be challenging.
